Weird Question
Hello,
I am a regular poster, obviously incognito. I have a question and don't really know how to ask it. I'd rather not be judged so I am being chicken and using a fakie name.
I made an anonymous poll, because I was just wondering about "cutting".
If you only do it once are you considered a 'cutter'?
Do you think it's crazy?
I have done it once in a very blue moon, and I was just wondering.... does that make you a "cutter" in need of help even if it's only been a few times?
I know this is probably the most obserd place to ask about this, but I really trust your judgement and opinions, suggestions and advice.
Thank You.

Re: Weird Question
i think that people who "cut" do it because it gives them a sense of control over their lives. It is they way they chose to vent their anxieties, fears, angers, frustrations....etc Some do it for attention...
Either way it is an unhealthy reaction.... And i do think they should speak to someone about it. About getting better ways to express themselves

Re: Weird Question
Please really go talk to someone. I worked in the hospital last year and it really scared me when a young girl my age (29) came into the hospital in a bloody mess and didnt want to go back to her home and was so scared. I was panicked for her because I never saw anything like that before. She was once a person who said "I only did it once or twice". It really frightens me to think what culd have happened to her or what could happen to you. I have #s and groups that I gave to this girl if you want them. Dont ask yourself how mnay times, one ime is too much.

Re: Weird Question
I understand you keeping your identity hidden, however, I am not afraid to say that when I was 11 to about 14, I used to cut myself. Not often, but I did. My parents found out, and I received helped. Even if you THINK about it, I suggest seeking counseling. Self-mutilation comes in so many different forms. You may even be self-mutilating in other ways you are not aware of. Hang in there and good luck

Please, please go seek help. It is so serious and I am so sorry you are going through this. It is something that a lot of people live with and don't know where to turn or what to do about it. There is help out there, I promise.

Re: Weird Question
In high school and early college, I used to self-mutilate.
I'd scratch myself with my fingernails til I bled, or pluck every single hair out of my leg with a tweezer, or shave off layers of skin with my razor, etc. I HONESTLY didn't know why I felt the need to do these things. I never went to anyone for help.
I came home - Rich came home after graduation (we were 3 hours apart, at different schools), and suddenly everything was OK again and I didn't mutilate anymore. I was calmer.
I've come to the realization that I'd never felt so ALONE as I did in those early college years.
eta: the worst I ever got was when I used a comb to gouge my legs. I had ribbons of blood streaming down around my ankles, feet, toes...and I didn't even care that i was ruining my sheets/carpet.
All those months...I can't believe my roommates never said/did anything

Re: Weird Question
I could never do it, but unfortunately it seems to have become popular with teenagers (not for kicks, as a means of dealing with emotional pain.) There are a few students in my school who do it.

Re: Weird Question
imo if you did it once it is a problem bc noone should be doing that at all. People who cut usually do it to take away any emotional pain they are going through. I believe that if u did it once u need to ask yourself why?? what is going on right now? maybe u need to address the real issue here and seek counseling. Hope this helped.

Believe it or not they say that as you get older alot of these type of behaviors subside. Even eating disorders tend to have this type of dwindling effect. But there are still some people that hang on to these behaviors. Maybe for security reasons. If you cant find comfort in something else, why lose the only thing thats comforting.

Re: Weird Question
As others have said, I think that even if you are thinking about self-mutilation, you should seek out some form of counseling/therapy. People don't cut for no reason. There is always some underlying issue/problem, even if it is one that you aren't yet aware of.

Re: Weird Question
Self mutilation helps take away the emotional pain by producing real pain, which is much much easier to deal with. It also is a way of getting out of the moment , when you are doing it, you can ONLY focus on it, your mind cant wander, worry or think about other things because of the pain eliminates the other feelings, and you concentrate so hard.
The best therapuetic way to help is to find something can you can get as involved it.
One teacher I had in school used to say his method was having people sing a song. As silly as it sounds, you have to focus on singing, your mind is working and cant wander. Strategies like that might help you work past the feelings of wanting to do it enough to move on.
Working through the emotions leading you to feel this way are one thing, but I do think you need to find an immediate release or tactic to get over those moments of wanting to cut when your feeling its immeniant.
Good luck!
