Weird thing my ped. said
ds is 19 weeks and weighs 16.9 oz and is 27 in...at our 4 month well visit yesterday our pediatrician said next month we'll talk about putting him in a forward facing car seat. I thought the law in NY was rear facing up to a year old, no matter the weight? Can anyone advise?

Yeah, maybe he meant a regular car seat instead of the infant seat Maybe he feels baby is too long to be comfy much longer in the carrier?
That is the law. AT LEAST 20 pounds AND a year, but really even longer as long as you can.

Re: Weird thing my ped. said
he definitely doesn't fit in the infant car seat. All he asked was is he in a rear facing car seat? I said to myself, um, of course Then he said, next month we'll talk forward facing. That just confused me even more. I guess I'll see what he meant by that next month

DO NOT DO THAT!!!!!!
Age is much more important than weight when it comes to forward facing. NEVER, EVER place them forward facing before 1 year. Even longer is better. We turned DD around at 15 months, and now that I know even more about it, I would probably try to do 18 months if we ever had a 3rd.
There is no way that a 4mo baby can sit forward-facing. Even the slightest fender bender will cause extreme damage to DC's neck.
You can move him to a convertible seat at any point, but it MUST be rear-facing.

Thanks! I just tried looking up the laws for NYS and i can't find the minimum requirements by law. The recommendation says 20lbs and a year at least. So even though ds will definitely be over 20 lbs before a year, I should keep him rear facing, for at LEAST a year.

OMG! Run do not walk, run from that doctor!! If he is seriously telling you to forward face a 6 month old he has no business practicing medicine and dispensing advice to parents.

The more i think about it, it doesn't make sense for him to suggest that since he is a great doctor. I'm hoping I just misunderstood and that he meant no more infant carrier and just use my britax. I came into the office yesterday with ds in the infant carrier b/c we have the britax in my dh's jeep, and our other britax isn't installed yet in my car, so maybe thats what he meant. I guess he saw ds is really getting too big for the infant carrier. Like I said, I'll find out next month what he meant, but no way will I put him forward facing anyway.

Re: Weird thing my ped. said
He is defiantly too young to be facing forward, regardless of his weight, and height. His little neck is not strong enough to face forward yet. The did a study in other countries and found the longer a child sat rear facing the less trauma the child faced to the neck in car accidents. Alot less neck fractures and whip lash. I would just wait and see what Dr says next month, but if i were you i would print some info up on the pros of facing rear facing and bring it with you. That way you can question him with the information on you.

Forward facing is - I believe - one year or 20 lbs but you don't have to switch him if you don't want to yet. It seems a bit young considering the age. I would think that his neck would have to be more sturdy.

At this point, I would think that's what he meant as well.

This is exactly what the woman at a CPR course just told us. It's age not weight now. I believe in Europe they keep the kids rear facing until 2 years old. Now they are saying 15 months here unless the child is just too long to sit comfortably that way
