I am just seeing this now. As an attorney (and I work for a hospital - not Northwell) this sounded crazy so I looked into it a little.
Over the course of several years, the plaintiff had a history of multiple suicide attempts, there were multiple emails with the co-worker who did kill himself saying that she wanted to kill herself (and her father), she was asking about where to get a gun - a lot of things that were left out of the story in the news.
Under the law, a person can be held in a psychiatric hospital, involuntarily, for 72 hours (for evaluation), if it is thought that they are a danger to themselves or others. Obviously, the jury found in favor of this woman, but it was not a clear cut as the news story makes it out to be.
