well I guess gardening has taken its toll on me b/c I have.......

POISON IVY!!!!!!!!! on both of my forearms!!! I just got back from the doc (yes he's open on Sunday thank god!!).......I wasn't sure what I had its itchy as hell and its burning!!! the previous owner warned us there was a little bit of it behind the garage, I didn't go behind the garage but I was right near that area, maybe it grew out further. I've had this for the past 3 days!! I tried using over the counter creams and they weren't doing anything, my doctor gave me a shot in my arm and it hurts soooooo bad!!

I'm in agony!!! anyone ever have it too? Chat Icon

I had it pretty bad 2 years ago - in between my fingers and everything. I am now very diligent looking for it in my yard and getting rid of it. I will use disposable gloves and put it into a plastic grocery bag. Then I will wash up right away. I have been pretty lucky this year (I got a tiny bit on my stomach - I must have scratched right at my jeans line).

I found that even Rx creams didn't really help me (although my dad swears by calomine lotion), but it got so bad, I would sit at night with ice cubes on my fingers and then finally I sterilized a pin, popped them and put alcohol on it to dry it up - that actually worked, but it is not recommended.

Get ZANFEL! It is about $20 for a small tube ut it def. works. I had poison ivy a few years ago on my arms & legs (and I spread it to my face) and this was the only thing that helped me. As at the pharmacy counter if they have it (I got it at CVS). You use it in the shower, but it doesn't lather like soap. It just kind of washes away the itchy stuff. I only needed to use it a couple of times.

I had it years ago when I was in college. I went early for a community service project that included clearing out a school yard.

You would've thought I was rolling in it- and apprently I am more allergic/effected than the average person. I had it down my throat and all over my face, purple welts on my legs. It was horrible. I looked like quazimoto.

That was my first foray into an OOS college. I didn't last the semester- between the infected poison ivy, the weird roomate, homesickness and TBAF- my first weeks were horrible.

Thank god I've never gotten it again!

(PS- when I came home I went to the Dr. and wound up on an antibiotic and 2 different creams for it.)

Aww I hope you feel better soon. i had that a few years ago at while gardening at DH's grandfathers house. I was not a happy camper and trying not to scratch was even worse. Sounds like you have it bad because I used OTC and they were working but I still went to the doctors as a precaution

Make sure you get that Poison Ivy killer spray to get rid of it this way it is gone for the summer. That is what we used after the incident because we didn't want his grandfather getting it.

wow it sounds like you had it really really bad!!! what scares me is that I read it has an incubation period of 12-48 hrs, so I hope that doesn't mean it could possibly spread in like a day or two. I put first aid gauze around both arms so it doesn't touch anything!! I look like some kind of athlete or something Chat Icon the doc gave me a shot of something at the office and I'm taking prednisone (steroid) twice a day, and an antihistamine pill every 6 hrs. this S U C K S........I can only imagine how you felt having this and being at a new school away from home!!

thanks for the tip!! after this episode, I decided we're going to hire the gardener my MIL uses to clean up the back area that I was trying to work on. I went every weed or mysterious plant removed except for the roses, peonies, azalea bush, lilac bush & fig tree. I'm going to see what they'll charge me to take the poison ivy out too (originally I wasn't going to have them go behind the garage at all).

do you think I should throw out the gloves I was wearing the day I touched the poison ivy?

I'm so stupid I don't even know what it looks like!! I should google it to make sure I don't touch it if its anywhere else in my yard. I'd have to be really really brave to try your method!! although I've wanted to scratch the little blisters off, I can't imagine using a pin, and alcohol......ouch!! kudos to you for doing that!! at least it got better!

thank you!! I'll have to ask them at the drugstore. I bought some poison ivy scrub the other day- Tecnu or something? it's a green & white tube. I only used it once so far.

Yes throw out anything that came in contact with the Ivy because you don't want it rubbing up to anything. But with tools i don't know if you just wash them down good but gloves i would throw out. That is what i did to be safe. Then i just went out and bought new gloves.

Hope you are feeling better. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
