Went for my Level 2 Sono today - I feel much better!
A few weeks ago I posted about my AFP results, and them being higher than normal for my age. My dr. told me I could opt for the amnio, but she did not see it as a major concern, and I didn't want to risk it....
I had my sono at Huntington hospital today, at the Women's Health Center. This doctor was so much better than the woman that did my Level 1 sono - he talked me through every single thing he was doing.
1st, he sat and discussed the AFP results a bit more, and gave me details on each screening, and did say that there is less risk of miscarriage with amnio if its done by skilled person who has done a lot of them. That made sense, but I still am not risking it....
We told him we do not want to know what the gender is, but if I saw something by accident, then I guess thats ok. He laughed and said - oh no, there won't be any accidents.
He was so funny - but also so informative - he showed me the brain in detail, the spine, the heart. No markers of any health problem or disability, thank God.
He kept asking me what I thought it was, and then he would tease us and say - theres the foot - does it look like a boy foot or a girl foot?
At the end, I asked him if HE knew what the baby was - he said yes. It was so weird knowing that this stranger knew, bt we didn't!
But - to make a long story short - everything looked fine on the sono. I could not be happier, and feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders!!!!
The baby is 12 oz - the same as a can of soda!!!

Re: Went for my Level 2 Sono today - I feel much better!
Well, happy to hear that you feel better about it!
Ooooooo, that must of been so hard that the DOC knew the sex of the baby. I would be like, TELL ME NOW!
Well, I want to know.
Ok, this may sound weird but my boss was telling me that her Ultrascreen, which is the AFP right? came back like a false positive and she was asked the same, amnio...get one? She didnt and her baby is normal and healthy. This also happened to a friend of hers and she denied the amnio, just had a healthy baby. Well, they both had GIRLS !
So, just kind of weird that their girls gave those results.

Re: Went for my Level 2 Sono today - I feel much better!
Well, the Level I ultrascreen - both the sonogram and blood test, came up excellent - nothing wrong at all.
I went for the AFP result which is done I think around wk 16 - where they take 2 vials of blood from you, and that came up 1 in 217 chance of Downs, which was not good for my age (32,) where it should be 1 in 450 or something....
So that really agitated me, although I have heard so many stories from people telling me they went thru the same thing as what your boss went through... so that made me feel better - I just needed to see (or have a doctor) see the baby and tell me everything looked good....

Ladies - it was NOT easy, and if I didn't have my strong-as-a-rock husband standing there saying - NO, we don't want to know, I definitely would have caved....
And, I have to admit, there is something very exciting about knowing I have another surprise waiting for me when all of this is said and done....

Re: Went for my Level 2 Sono today - I feel much better!
I went to a maternal-fetal specialist at North Shore LIJ for my Level II last week b/c I tested positive for the pavo virus from my initial pregnancy blood work. I just wanted a 2nd opinion to make sure nothing was wrong with the baby. The specialist told me the reason the AFP blood results get such a high false positive rate is b/c quest (which is where we all get our blood work done) is notorious for making mistakes on bloodwork and for false positives . She said that when her patients come to her (she deals with high risk pregnancies, womem with diseases, etc.) she sends the bloodwork to a specialty lab, not Quest. So after reviewing my blood work which I got done 3 times, she said I dont even have the virus. Soemthing with the level of antibodies and a bunch of medical mumbo jumbo, but basically I have nothing to worry about with the baby!
I am so glad everything is ok with your baby and you feel relieved.

Hey Liza, you should've asked if that was a Pepsi or Diet Pepsi soda can...then you'd know if it was a boy or girl.
Glad to hear all is well!

Re: Went for my Level 2 Sono today - I feel much better!
Glad it went well! I think it would drive me nuts if the doc knew and not me. When I went to the hospital one day and they did a sono, the tech said she thought she knew but wouldn't tell us, we'd have to wait till our level II. What a tease!!!!

How exciting that you aren't finding out the sex of the baby. I don't know if I could wait. When my friend was pregnant, she didn't want to know, but her husband did. So he knew for all those months and not once did he slip and tell her!
