Went to a concert last night, got me thinking

I hate encores. I think the premise is so snooty & pompous. We're done performing, but if you really love me, clap & yell a lot for us and we'll come back out and honor you with more songs.

Drives me nuts...

Yeah, I always thought the same thing.

Don't have my spend a fortune on a ticket than beg you to come out and play another song or 2.

Re: Went to a concert last night, got me thinking

are encores always based on if people scream and yell for more or do the entertainers already have one scheduled prior to the show?? meaning, when i've been to shows, most of the time, the performer's most popular one or two songs is the encore. then those songs wouldn't get played? i think it is just a ploy to charge the audience up a bit at the end of a long night.

i've actually been to one concert where they really made it seem like the show was OVER - and people started to file out of the place, etc. and THEN they did come back on. so, there were no screams of 'please come back' going on and they still came out and performed one more song for people.

it never bothered me before - but i can see where you are coming from w/ the narcissism of it. i just don't think most performer's do it that way - i think encores are a pre-arranged thing that happen no matter what.

but i could be wrong Chat Icon Chat Icon

I never really gave it that much thought or looked at it that way. Chat Icon

I suppose that is the case but when you're at a concert you're just in the moment... it's exciting and encores seem like part of the experience.

Re: Went to a concert last night, got me thinking

The purpose of the encore is solely to let the crowd know "we are almost done".

If a band plays a straight 20 song set and then just leaves, the crowd would probably be shocked and get ******.

I don't think its pompous. It's more to just "slowly bring the crowd down".

Re: Went to a concert last night, got me thinking

I can see why you would think that...
but I think encores are so necessary if they haven't played a song or two that they MUST play. But of course...they always leave the songs they MUST play for the encore!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Went to a concert last night, got me thinking

I think encores have in a way lost their meaning.

They should be a result of a band playing a great show, getting the crowd excited to the point that at the end of the show, they are wanting more. Therefore, cheering for more.

I go to a lot of concerts and EVERYONE plays an encore. It's standard.

I don't think it's narcissistic, I just think it's what the crowd now "expects" as opposed to a special extra song or two after a great performance.

I like encores, but bands just save their popular songs for them now. I prefer encores where you get a great song (popularity or not) to end a great show.

Its so funny that you posted this.

My mom and I went to see Neil Diamond last week. He was awesome. The crowd was electric ALL NIGHT. He said goodnight and ran off. He hadnt sung Coming to America yet..so of course he was coming back. We cheered FOREVER..it took him forever to come back out. I felt the same way and kind of felt stupid in a way! LOL

I told my mom I would love to come back as Neil Diamond in my next life (or any performer for that matter). Imagine thousands of people chanting your name while you stand behind the curtain teasing them??? Chat Icon

I have to agree with most of this, this is what I really mean.

I feel like they've lost their meaning b/c everyone does them, you expect them, esp. because they usually save the "big songs" for the encore and you know they're going to certainly play those songs. I know it's more "tradition" now to do them, so I'm not singling any artist out. Just my silly ramblings for the day Chat Icon

Re: Went to a concert last night, got me thinking

I went and saw Daughtry on Saturday night.

While the concert was awesome and I am in love with him,I was very disappointed he did not have an encore. His show ended, the curtain came down, the lights came on, and everyone left.

That SUCKED!!Chat Icon

Agreed ... they are planned - part of the set list.
