We're Back and I have a trip review w/ pics (Hershey, Strasburg Raiilroad Museum and Crayola Factory)
It was ALL fantastic.
I went with my ILs, my SIL, her BF and their son.
Crayola Factory - you can do this in a few hours and it took us 2 hours to get there from Smithtown, so it could really be a day trip. We did it on the way to Hershey. Nothing over the top, small, but SO much fun for the kids. Lots of free markers, crayons, clay for the kids to take home. Completely hands on. They have exhibits where most of their products can be played with....form safety scissors, to sidewalk chalk, to glow pens, clay, paint, crayons, markers. It was so much fun. DS is 2.9 and he had a blast, my nephew is 1.5 and it was just as much fun for him! They show the kids how they make crayons too and you get to put the wrapper on a crayon which was kinds cool. Oh and the crayola store.....did you know that it was even possible to drop $100 on Crayola products? It is.
Id definitely go back!
           
Strasburg Railroad Museum,
This was our second time there. We went last year during the "Day Out with Thomas" it was a madhouse but fun then, so we decided to go back when Thomas wasnt there. DS LOVED LOVED LOVED the 45 minute authentic steam engine ride through scenic farmland PA. Actually, we all LOVED it. The museum itself is great for all ages. There has to be close to 30 historic/antique/restored trains. My FIL loved its history, my DS just loved it. They have a room set up too with wooden tracks, lego tracks, all kinds of tracks for the kids to play with. DS couldve stayed there all day. Id go back a 3rd time. ITs definitely better for 2.5+, my nephew didnt really care that we were there (Eddie didnt last year, except for Thomas).
       
Chocolate World
FANTASTIC. This is the newest addition to Hershey Park and the Chocolate Factory ride is now part of Chocolate World and not HersheyPark. This was our first time to chocolate world. May have been a little to old for my nephew, but was perfect for DS. They have a 3D movie, a place where you can work on a factory line and bag kisses. Then there is the Build Your Own Chocolate Bar experience, which may be one of the most fun things we did. We all had to wear hair nets and aprons and then you pick you chocolate, your bar filling, and bar topping. You actually make a bar and get to watch and follow it down the line. Then you design you own personalized packaging and it gets to you in nice keepsake tin case. Chocolate World is also where you will find the GIANT chocolate store/gift shop, spent a fortune in there too! LOL. They also had some of the Hershey Characters walking around.
HersheyPark - I was afraid that DS was goingt o be too little for Hershey, and my nephew who was even younger at 1.5. I WAS WRONG. Turns out that kiddie rides actually outnumber adult rides. That was fantastic. It was also great that unlike DW(we went last year) that there is something for everyone, even the littlest toddler and then the adults. Even my 1.5 nephew could go on all the kiddie rides, with the exception of about 2 of them. I was so surprised by how toddler friendly it was. The park itself hasnt changed much since I was a kid, but it kept up nicely and was clean and easy to get around. If I had to pick between DW and Hershey knowing what I know now.....Id do Hershey.

Thanks for posting this. We're actually going to the Railroad Museum, Hershey, and Dutch Wonderland next week with our two boys, my IL's and my SIL and her family. We've been to Hershey before but not the other places. It's good to know the 2 1/2, 3 and 3 1/2 year old will be able to enjoy the railroad museum because I was a little worried it would be over their head, kwim? Great pics!

Can you do Crayola and The Chocolate World in 1 day and then the park the next day?

We went to Crayola Factory last year. Loved it!
We are doing PA next week (Dutch Wonderland & Strasburg..Thomas)...CANNOT WAIT!

We left on Sat, stopped at the Crayola Factory on the way up. Sunday we did the RR Museum and Chocolate World, Monday we did the park.
We stayed at the Hawthorn Suites in Lincoln PA. About 10 minutes from RR Museum and Dutch Wonderland (we did DW last year) and about a half hour from Hershey.

I just booked this trip, and very much appreciate your review. I was going to skip crayola factory due to other reviews, but your has encouraged me, and coloring is literally DS favorite thing to do.

For those who were wondering, we stayed at the Hawtorn Suites by Wyndham in Lancaster. It was about $90/night. Very clean, updated, convenient to a lot. Within 5 miles on Dutch Wonderland and the RR Museum, about 1/2 an hour (easy ride) to Hershey.
