West Coast Vacation.. need help deciding
DH and I would really like to take a trip to the west coast the last week of August. Neither of us have ever been.
We are thinking of Seattle, San Diego or San Francisco. Want to see what your input was and if you have any recommendations on where to stay or what to do at each.
TIA!

What about flying to San Francisco and staying for a few days - go to the vineyards and see the area around the city as well. Then you could drive down the coast and stop at a couple of places like carmel, san simeon (hearst castle), LA etc and end in San Diego and rest there for a few days.

this is what we're doing this summer! we have a wedding in San Diego in August. So a week before the wedding, we're flying into San Francicso, staying there for a few days and then taking a few days to drve down to San Diego, checking out some stuff along the coast on the way. We're gonna end up in San Diego and fly home from there. We had no problem getting multi destinaton airline tickets, and we paid about $270 a person, which isn't too bad for cross country flight! i'm SOOO excited because i've never been there before!!

I really didn't think Seattle was all that great for more than like two days.
San Francisco is amazing. The weather is great and there is tons to do in the area. You can go up to Muir Woods and see the redwoods and head out to Napa for a day.

Honestly I can't remember but it wasn't that crazy - I did it with my family like 12-14 years ago. Don't forget you can make it as long or as short as you want depending on how many places you want to visit in between and which route you take - we drove down the coast.
I could be wrong but I think it was like an 8-10 hour drive depending on the route - but you could easily break it up over a few days with short stops in between - you could see the redwoods, hearst castle etc.

yeah.. this is what i've heard, too. probably about an 8 hour drive if you did it all at once, but you can break it up over a few days or a week and make it more bearable. apparently theres lots to see along the way. haha long car trips don't phase me at all- we drove everywhere on vacation growing up... my parents even drove out to CA with me when i was about 8 months old! apparently i was so happy to be out of my car seat when we got back that i start walking like the day after we got back

Re: West Coast Vacation.. need help deciding
When we lived in SD, we were able to drive up to Oakland in 6 hours (a little under, but DH has a heavy foot and a fast car).
We have also done the Pacific Coast Highway in 10ish hours. (but I think we hit LA traffic)
think of it as the same as NY to NC

Re: West Coast Vacation.. need help deciding
I agree with the posters who suggested the drive -- the Pacific Coast Highway or whatever it is called is supposed to be a beautiful, scenic drive. It is a lot better than the scary jumper plane we took from San Diego to LA, that's for sure!! There are some great stops along the way (wine country) and both San Diego and SF are gorgeous. It is hard to choose just one! I'd skip Seattle, IMO, not the best!
