Westchester neighborhood information needed
DH's aunt lives in Yorktown but that is about all we know. We are looking for good schools and a town that is not too far (15 minutes or less) from Metro North.
Thanks

Re: Westchester neighborhood information needed
Yorktown is a nice area, most of Westchester above Yonkers is good, stay away from Peekskill. Lower Westchester is going to be $$$, so the further North you go the more affordable it is....

Re: Westchester neighborhood information needed
My sister lives in Yorktown Heights, they love it there! The commute is awful though, Sis works in Jersey City and spends 2 hrs EACH WAY every day, blech. But they love the town and their 3 girls have had AMAZING success in the school system there, so she is willing to do the awful commute. Ytown is about a 20-30 minute drive from the nearest Metro North stations, without that drive it would be easier... Surrounding towns that are good are places like Cortland Manor and Croton on Hudson, both lovely. I'd stay away from Peekskill, lousy schools (though apparently they are getting better)....

DH also has two cousins in Yorktown Schools and they haven't had anything but a great education. The only problem with Yorktown is, like you said, a 20 minute train ride to Croton Harmon train station. DH works in the city so it wouldn't be as bad as your sister.

Yes, I know about Peekskill (DH calls it Pigsqueal). Lower Westchester is definitely out of our price range

Re: Westchester neighborhood information needed
I grew up in Ardsley which is really great for kids and close to the city but there is no designated train station for the town and getting a permit to park at the nearest station is difficult. You do have the option of taking a commuter bus to the train. That's the issue with most of the stations, and parking is VERY $$ once you do get a permit. If you can afford it scarsdale is an excellent neighborhood. Dobbs Ferry, Bronxville, Edgemont and Eastchester aren't bad choices either.

Re: Westchester neighborhood information needed
I live in Rye Brook and LOVE it. Train is 7 to 10 mins away (Port CHester is a little closer than Rye station, and parking is easier there as well).
Not sure where Yorktown is-- I did a search, and it looks likes it's north of Mt Kisco, which is also a great little town-- although don't know what the commuting is like from there. But, based on some of the other town recs that I actually do know where they are-- I am about 15-20 mins from Scarsdale, Larchmont, Edgemont, Ardsley, etc... though I would just throw out Rye Brook. It's a pretty small town and schools are excellent.
