What age do you think...daycare related
Not to start the age old debate, but...
At what age do you think daycare becomes really beneficial for kids? I am weighing my options right now and really don't know if it is the right time to put DD in daycare. I know people have strong opinions on both, but at what age do you feel a child NEEDS socialization?
Thanks!

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
It's hard because I feel like maybe they start needing it around 2 years old- but that is also the age when they start realizing you are leaving them and getting seperation anxiety..
DD has been in daycare since 8 weeks and only recently- as she neared 2 years old - did she start to really have a hard time at drop off.
But when I pick her up she is having a blast and really enjoying the other kids, the activites etc.

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
honestly, from my experience ASAP...
everything that they learn is experiences that build. take sharing for instance. if they are learning to share by 6-8 months, it isn't nearly as hard a concept as it would be for a 2 year old just entering daycare and in the prime of the "me" stage.

What age do you think...daycare related
My personal opinion is that their needs change at around 2 such that they might enjoy daycare, but not that they necessarily need daycare at that time. It depends on the alternative. For us, our nanny was great for babies, but not for toddlers. She didn't want to take them out, wasn't as active, wasn't a "teacher", etc. Instead of looking for a new nanny, where we couldn't be sure those needs would be met, we went with daycare, and overall it was the right choice for us at the time. Had I been able to be a SAHM, I wouldn't have started preschool until about 3, and then it would be for 2-3 days a week, for part of the day. If we had a nanny who we were confident fit our needs, I also probably would have waited a little longer and/or not done full, long days (8-5/6) 5 days a week.
ETA- I have 2 kids 13 mths apart. So, they were already learning certain things about socialization from each other. They were constantly learning to share or take turns, to get into "arguments" and get over it, interact with each other, etc. My answer might be different if they didn't have each other as much and as soon as they did.

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
we opted to put DD in pre-school at 3 years old (turning 4). We did this because she was ready for Pre-school, but her birthdate left her back a year. We wanted her to be around other kids and you could tell she needed it. She did great!
On the other hand, DS is the same age and we opted not to put him in since we didn't think it would benefit him.

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
Thanks all. DD is 1, and we have a nanny now that also watches my nephew who is 10 months, so she does have another baby to play with. Our nanny is great with them and takes them out and plays with them a ton. I just started thinking about how daycare is more like school and wondered if it was time to put DD in a more structured program.

We put DD in daycare at 18 months. I had stayed home prior to that but at about a year old, we noticed that DD was interested in more and in other kids and we thought it would be good for her to not only be in a more structured setting but also be in an environment where she's exposed to more than I can expose her to and to start separation.
It really all depends on the child and your own comfort level.

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
DS#1 went in at 20 months and it was great for him
DS#2 had an awful experience from 3-3.5 and it set him back (before 3 was ok but nothing beneficial)...3.5+ on was great
DD is only 10 months, but she has benefited from being passed around to so many loving arms...

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
My DS has been in since 8 weeks and my IL watch a few days. He is learning so much that my ILs would never do with him.
He is starting to crawl so daycare is helping that process along. I will start putting him in more days because of the things he is doing.

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
I felt DD was ready around 10mos. We had a sitter 3 days a week at the house and she went to our friend's the other 2 days. She was becoming 'bored' around the house on the days she was home and I wasnt thrilled with the sitter, since she wasnt doing too much to stimulate her. We started daycare at 12 mos, and I cannot believe the difference in her. She is learning so much, talks so much and loves the other lo's in her class. I think it was a great decision to start her then.

I would wait until 3 or over IMO . We looked at daycares for our 2 year old and decides not to put him in

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
My son started preschool at 2 yrs 3 months. it was a program 3 days a week for 2.5 hours each day. it was perfect! no need for full day daycare at that age just because.

Re: What age do you think...daycare related
I think around 2 is when it truly becomes beneficial. That's just my opinion, and simply based on when they become more independent and require less care (bottle feedings, diaper changes, etc). I personally think they may benefit from one on one, until they become older and more social. I also don't prefer the picking up of bad habits at an early age (and sickness and illness of course), if avoidable. So one on one to me, up until 2 or so, is best if possible.
Once my DD became 2.5, she really craved the interaction with other kids. It was too late for a 2 yo program but she went into a 3yo program this year and it was something she really enjoyed and was ready for. Eager to go, meet kids, explore, and confident at that, even though she was never in a school setting.
But I am sure every senario is different.
