Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
I am going through the same ordeal. I was just going to post about it. My DS has been crying non stop at night. He starts around 9-10pm.
I have been so stressed and feeling very down. I don't know what to do.
Ok. ladies... I know they say to get at least one burp but what happens if they don't burp at all? Sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't? What is the worse case scenario that would happen should he not ever burp. We have been giving mylicon drops.
And what happens if say his feeding gets out of wack and won't want to eat if the condition gets worse and the baby looses weight.
Will colic get worse? Right now he cries at night will he start during the day as well.
And I too want to know when it will go away...

Andrew doesn't burp at every feeding either It's so frustrating. I sit there forever trying to get one out of him. Then I get up and sit back down. I try it all
Then he cries and cries. Now today he is crying again Make it STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm reading Dr. Weissbluth's book now and there is quite a bit of info about colic & how to soothe the babies and what to expect, etc. It's a bit technical, but might be helpful for you.

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
There's a difference between colic and fussiness - Most newborns go through a "witching hour" of crying for about 2-3 hours - that's typical and usually occurs at night. Colic is when the baby cries at all times, during the day and night and is usually caused by gas and/or reflux. Usually, as the digestive system matures, baby grows out of it, around 3 months, though for us, it was around 5 months. If your baby has bad gas, these are the following things that helped when I had the same problems, but keep in mind, nothing was a miracle... it just takes time, unfortunately
- Put her on her left side and pump her legs. It may help release trapped gas bubbles.
- If your production of milk is overly abundant, that may cause additional gas so if that's the case, it may help to pump or express a little milk before BFing
- Your little girl may be too small just yet, but when she's a little bigger, try the swing. It was one of the only things that helped distract Alex from the gas pains
- Place your little girl across your legs, belly down. The pressure on her tummy may alleviate some of the gas pains
- The superman hold - place her face down on your forearm with her hed in the palm of your hand. The pressure on her belly from your forearm will help.
- Mylicon drops may help, but use them consistently.
- Some people have success with the 5 "s's" - swaddle, shush, sway... hmmm, can't remember the other two, but it's from secrets of the baby whisperer. The theory is that you try to mimick the womb experience by swaddling them tight, movement and making a lot of noise. Some people swear by white noise - vacuuem cleaner, hairdryer, dryer, etc.
- Baby carrier - the only time Alex would calm down from gas is when I'd put her in the baby carrier and walk around. She would fall asleep in minutes usually.

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
And let's say the baby drinks a 3 oz bottle and only burps say after she's had 1 oz. and he finishes the rest but doesn't burp at the end. Is it still fine because he at least got that one burp in?

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
With Sydney around 3 months we saw drastic improvement. She is now almost 6 months and everyone comments on what a happy baby she is. As far as the food thing. Whenever I would ask my ped about it he told me as long as she is gaining weight he wouldn't switch the formula. (She also had reflux but still gained plenty of weight). He told us if she was refusing the bottle and not gaining then maybe we would need to switch but since she wasn't doing that then we shouldn't switch since babies change so much you wouldn't no if the change in her mood was due to the formula or not.

I usually lay Ava on her left side on my lap and rub her back when I can't get a good burp out of her. That usually does the trick. OR, I lay her on her back, and then she gets it that she needs to burp, and starts to cry, so I try burping her again.

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
Kevin was colic and had mild reflux and digestive issues (most like casued by lactose intolerance and using regular formula - this was the only thing that changed when I switched formula to Alimentum). I would say it started around 4ish weeks and lasted to about 11 weeks. It got worse before it got better. The 10th week was the worst of them all. My day was basically 3 hour repeat play (at least the day hours) was 1 hour of crying, 1 hour of eating/changing diapers, and one hour of sleeping or decentness but only if held in my arms.....I thought that week would never end - but the next week he started sleeping thru the night and the colic was sooo much improved!!!!!!!

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
Jacob had gas/reflux/colic for about 4 months, and honestly I dont even like to type about it because it was such a horrific time that I do not want to even drudge up the memories. I agree with everything Beth has said though. I did everything, and anything, and in the end it was just TIME that made it go away. Around 3 1/2 to 4 months is when the incessant crying stopped. I dont even like to watch the home videos of Jacob in those first few months b/c the video shows him crying all the time and it really does bring me back there and it's somewhere I really do not want to be. I may sound like azz, but for me, it was wayyyyy traumatic. I was basically handling him all by myself (long story) and it really took a toll on me. Also read "The happiest baby on the block" it is very informative as far as colic goes and ways to soothe. Good luck.

What is the worse case scenario if your baby doesn't want to burp? what can you do? Continue giving them the mylicon drops? How long do you give them that? For the whole time they are colic?
What happens if your baby does not want to eat or does not eat enough? What would happen in that case scenario. Would they get put in a hospital?
Try different positions for trying to burp. My daughter is also difficult to burp. I usually start out with her sitting on my lap, with her chin supported by my thumb on one side and index finger on the other. I do that for a couple of minutes. Then I put her over my shoulder for a few minutes. In both positions, I alternate between patting and rubbing. I read that when patting, you should pat hard enough to hear it across the room, but not so hard that you would hear it in ANOTHER room. Sometimes I lay her on her back for a minute or two and gently rub her belly. Often changing positions is what will release the gas for her. As long as I get good burps in the middle of the feeding, I don't worry too much if I don't get it at the end. I figure that she isn't getting as much air at the end of the feeding since she isn't as hungry and isn't drinking as hard.
When she seems really uncomfortable with gas I use the Mylicon drops plus Gripe Water (there are different kinds, and I use the one with fennel and ginger in it). I know that I probably don't give it often enough, but you can use both up to 6 times a day. The Mylicon isn't absorbed into the system so if you need to give it the whole time they are colic, I think it would be fine. My sister used it for many, many months.
I think if the baby doesn't eat enough or at all, it would show in their lack of weight gain, and the doctor would probably suggest new formula and start bringing the baby in often for weight checks. I think putting them in the hospital would only be for something like Failure to Thrive.

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
If he is only crying at night maybe he is overtired. I know that if I keep Luka up even 1/2 hour later than I notice when he rubs his eyes it is really hard to get him to even eat because he will scream for at least 20 minutes. Try putting him to bed 20 minutes earlier and see if that helps.

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
Well last night Matthew seemed better and didn't have a crying episode. Just a little bit because he was tired and wanted to eat. Now is colic everyday or certain days a week? Maybe last night was just him taking a break. He started with the crying spells on Friday night and Saturday night. So now I was wondering if Colic only happens a couple of days and not everyday. I don't know. Are there different levels of colic?
As for the burping I have tried all positions, and sometimes I get nothing at all. What makes it harder is when they fall asleep. This is really worrying me. I hate having to burp. When can you stop burping them where they just burp on their own.
But what would be the worse thing that would happen if they didn't ever burp? would it make colic worse?

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
My little cousin had reflux. He would have a hard time burping as well. My aunt found that when she would hand the baby to someone else, he would burp. So sometimes, she would just hold him up and under his arms, and that would help. Just make sure you dont hold the baby so that they could spit up on your face Good luck!

Re: What age to babies grow out of Colic?
Well I took Matthew to the doctor's today anyway to make sure there was nothing else wrong with him and the doctor found nothing wrong and even said he is a very strong boy.
He now weighs 7 lbs. 11 oz. and is 21 1/2 inches long. at his last visit he was 6 lbs. 12 oz.
I guess we just have to monitor him at night. I don't know how colic works, if it's every night or only a few nights a week, if it's night and day or if it starts out mild and gets more severe as the weeks progress. I just don't know. We are keeping our fingers crossed again tonight like we did last night. The doctor also said to keep giving him the mylicon drops until he sees him again in two weeks where he gets his first shots...i'm sure he's going to love that.
We gave him a tub bath today for the first time and he loved it. Did not complain. He only cried when we took him out. I guess he hates being naked and cold...or maybe he did not want to get out of the water.
