What are hypo-allergenic dogs considered?
I know some dogs are hypo-allergenic because they have human like hair, with little or no dander, but what about the cross bred ones....are they considered designer dogs? When we are ready for a dog for my son, it needs to be one with little dander since he is allergic. We like dogs that are on the bigger side, not tiny. What are some good suggestions?

Re: What are hypo-allergenic dogs considered?
"Designer Dogs" is a marketing term to make a mix/mutt seem appealing or more expensive. The issue with these dogs, other than the cockerpoo, is that they are too new to determine if they will be able to consistently produce the hypo-allergenic qualities.
Some dogs that are considered hypo-allergenic are:
Poodles Havanese Chinese Cresteds Maltese Yorkshire Terriers Schnauzer
(there are more, I'll add them as I recall)
With any dog, I suggest bringing the allergy-sensitive person to meet the dog before brining the dog into your home.
Good Luck!

Re: What are hypo-allergenic dogs considered?
We have a labradoodle (half poodle/half lab so she's a big dog) and I have not had any problems with my allergies. She is basically non-shedding and has wavy hair. My allergies flare up big time if we go to anyone's house who has a dog or a cat, I can last about a half hour max at someones house before my eyes itch and the nonstop sneezing starts.
ETA: I am not saying that all labradoodles are hypoallergenic, we lucked out, but allergies wasn't the only reason why we got her. I liked the fact they are little to no shedding. I grew up with labs and loved their qualities so I wanted a similar type of dog.

Re: What are hypo-allergenic dogs considered?
I have bad animal allergies - In my experience there is NO such thing as a guaranteed hypo-allergenic dog -
I know you didn't ask, but just as an FYI to avoid a lot of disappointment and/or stress for your family - when you stary exposing your child to the different breeds, try your best to do it in a controlled environment (Not in a pet store where there are 50 different breeds so who knows what you're allergic to!!)
I have a Yorkie that I am fine with - And now that I have her, I have become better with all dogs, but there are still some that bother my allergies MUCH more than others -
I had a Westie as a kid (suposedly hypo allergenic) I was fine with ALL dogs until I went away to college, then developed an allergy and could barely stay in my own house when I came home from college b/c she made me SO sick - It really is different for every person -

Re: What are hypo-allergenic dogs considered?
I always suggest Portuguese Water Dogs if you are allergic and looking for a bigger dog. They look somewhat like Labradoodles, but are definitely hypo-allergenic.

Re: What are hypo-allergenic dogs considered?
I am pretty sure that the Bichon Frise has hair, not fur, like the poodle. When I was looking into dogs that are good for allergy sufferers, this breed came up in a lot of searches.

Yours may be...but there is no guarantee when you purchase a mixed breed like that as to whether it will be hypo-allergenic. Same goes for Labradoodles - the dog may or may not be hypo-allergenic...there's no guarantee.

Re: What are hypo-allergenic dogs considered?
My brother has a severe dander allergy and he bought a Portugese Water Dog, they have a temperment similar to labs. His allergies have been fine (he's had the dog a couple of years).
