What are some things that you started to hate as you kept looking at homes to buy?

I've been looking at a lot of houses the past few days, and I have come to realize a ranch is not for me.

Initially, I was open to all kinds, but now I've crossed ranches off of my list.

i also can't stand mirrors on walls --- i can't help but hear "boom chica bow" music in the background..no offense to anyone, it's just my weird thoughts Chat Icon

What about you guys?

I'm a bit of a house junkie. My dad was a master carpenter before I was born and he owned 4 houses so he pretty much instilled in me a long list of pros and consChat Icon

DH had a house when we got married but it was really small. We never formally looked for our house. We had just gotten home from our honeymoon, I was off for the summer and found myself bored and on mlsli.com one day and well... Chat Icon

I'll warn you I'm a picky PITA...

No main roads
No corner lots (less privacy)
No rail road tracks
Not near commercial real estate

My father is now handicapped so in order for him to visit us the house had to have:
-little to no steps to enter (my house had one)
-at least a 1/2 bath on the first floor

-no wallpaper... I've removed it from over a dozen rooms... no thanks
-no popcorn ceilings
-no bathrooms w/o windows
-all bedrooms must be on the same floor
-no unattached garages/no garage
-must have a basement
-no w/w carpet, had to have hardwoods underneath
-no "modern" architecture... looks way dated now
-no flips

I'm sure there are more. I'm picky. I just can't think of them right now.

Like the OP I started my house search open to any style, and then decided that ranches weren't for me. I've lived in apartments all my life and always dreamed of a home with an upstairs. Also, I found that I'd walk in and out of a hi-ranch in 2 minutes. The layout just didn't click with me.

And after months of looking, I knew what things were important to me that I hadn't cared about / known about in the beginning. I wanted sliding glass doors out to a back patio. An attached garage. A backyard that the neighboring houses couldn't stare right into. Two-zone heating. I hadn't thought about any of that when I started looking, but after seeing so many houses, my list of must-haves, wants, and dealbreakers became much more refined.

After we started looking we (or I should say, I Chat Icon ) decided I didn't care for Capes with no dormers. I like how they look on the outside, but didn't like the slanted ceilings on the inside. That being said, if the rest of house was perfect I could have sucked it up.

I also knew I didn't want a ranch, ONLY bc I grew up in one. Now I sort of miss the convenience of them.

I knew I wanted a Colonial and I ended up with a splanch which was similar. I knew I wanted all my entertaining done on the ground level and I knew I wanted HIGH ceilings...in hindsight its kinda a pain in the a$$ but oh well!

ETA NO PANELING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
