Katie is a lazsy eater and falls asleep easily on my breast. So Ive been trying to BF but found that pumping and feeding her with a bottle of breast milk has been easier for both of us. I wish I could BF to bond with her but I think it will be OK this way.

Some women don't like the feeling of the baby latched on. I soley pumped for measurement. I needed to see exactly what DD was getting.....

Re: what are the reasons why some women solely pump?
I only pumped. I had trouble getting her to latch on after she started taking formula in the hospital (she was jaundice and needed it). When I got home, to be honest, I was in too much pain from delivery and we were both getting so frustrated trying to get her to latch on I just kind of gave up. I did want her to continue to get breast milk though, and I was able to pump enough to freeze a lot, too.

Re: what are the reasons why some women solely pump?
I did both in the beginning due to supply issues and eventually she go too used to the bottle and stopped latching. I pumped for 7 months and we've just now transitioned to all formula. It is definitely not how I wanted things to turn out at all. There is nothing I wanted to do more than to breastfeed and share that bond with my daughter for as long as she wanted to nurse but it didn't work out that way. I will always cherish each and every moment that I was able to nurse her.

Re: what are the reasons why some women solely pump?
I soley pumped for 1 year. In the hospital my milk did not come in due to my c/s and the medications I was on. The ped in the hospital forced me to use formula and told me "that if I wanted to keep trying this bfing thing that was my choice but I HAD to use formula for now". Anyway after the first bottle Molly never latched again I did everything but she just never did it again.
I will say that pumping is actually double the work of bfing. I am more than happy to help anyone who needs or wants to do it. You just have to know that you really have to be dedicated to it and put in the work. You need a hospital grade rental pump for the first 12 weeks. It is worth every minute I put into it.

I was unaware that you could freeze breast milk? When we have a child, we have decided that we are going to bottle feed, but for some reason, I never thought about pumping. It's actually a very good idea.
For those who pumped, about how long does it take for the average day. Also, would you be able to do this if you have to go back to work a couple of months after the birth? Thanks!

I did it in the beginning because my son was born w/o a sucking reflex (he was a preemie). He was only allowed to nurse for a minutes each side because it tired him out more than the bottle.

Re: what are the reasons why some women solely pump?
I only pump because my little boy never latched on, even though I worked harder on it than anything I have ever worked on in my life. I still try to BF him daily at 4 months!!! I will be talking about this with my therapist one day.
Pumping is one of the hardest jobs I have ever had and if I had the option to just put him to the boob...I would NEVER pump. I worry constantly about not having enough milk to give him, its difficult to have a day out without worrying that he won't have any food. Pumping 3/4 times a day is exhausting...the worry is exhausting...oy vey! I spend probably an hour a day pumping.
When Noah was first born I froze a HUGE stash of BM and now when I defrost it, about 60% of it is rancid fromt he lipase in my milk (or something like that) thats also a disappointment (more for therapist)
I am a big advocate for BF'ing and had planned on BF'ing Noah for a year or more and it is a huge disappointment to me that he won't BF (again, all will be covered with my therapist) I go to a BF'ing support group every week and I cry a little bit inside when I see the women BF'ing their babies. Noah and I have a very strong bond (so I wouldn't worry about not bonding)
Anyway, thats my story!

I definitely understand your sense of loss. It is still very hard for me to watch other women breastfeed.

Re: what are the reasons why some women solely pump?
I pumped because I had someone drilling into my head that my son wasnt getting enough from my breast So I started pumping so I could physically SEE what he was getting @ each feeding.... I regret this so much, and wish I wouldve just kept him at the breast..... Rachee- trust me- Ill be seeing you there
Pumping is ALOT of work- no doubt about that.... I pumped for the first 2 months, and am sorry I gave up when I did... its totally worth it IMO....

Re: what are the reasons why some women solely pump?
I pumped because Emily was in the NICU for 4 days and so I couldnt breastfeed her exclusively, and I guess that ocne she had the bottle she just didn't want to work for her food by breastfeeding. I kept trying to nurse her for a month but she never really wanted to do it, so I pumped and gave her my milk through the bottle for about the first 2 months. I wanted her to at least get SOME of my milk since it is healthiest, but hoenstly after some time it was just too much to have to prepare bottles and pump. I felt like I was always doing one of the two -- so I gave up. I also wish I could have just breastfed. My sister is doing it now and it seems so easy!!!

Re: what are the reasons why some women solely pump?
I breastfeed durning the day and then bottle feeding durning the night and DH gives him one or two of the bottles in the evening so he only gets 2-4 bottles a day. Durning the night he doest have the patients to latch on. It was difficult in the beginning because he had nipple confusion for the first two weeks but now he doesnt have a problem going between the two and he will a month on saturday. Looking back though I would have waited a month to introduce the bottle, that is my plan for the next one.
