What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
Besides the obvious of course, getting the nursery ready, registering, etc. There is other more specific stuff, like anything financial and legal-related, i.e. wills, life insurance, money for when you are on maternity or to be a SAHM.
I haven't really done much-- and I was looking at the checklist on The Nest to see what I should be doing.
Thought I would ask here as well.

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
My husband and I did our life insurance a few months ago and I have an apt. next month to start setting up a will (through my job). We also wanted to start another retirement account, but that has to wait for now. I tend to get overwhelmed easily at the start of something new, so I decided for my own sanity to get these things out of the way.

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
We took out life insurance when I was pregnant.
We have been meaning to do a will for months now and have been putting it off. Our families know who Jack would go to in case of anything - and god forbid something happens to them - our families know the back-up people.

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
What we're doing to *really prepare* for the baby's arrival is: 1. get a will ready 2. baby's account/college fund - shortly after baby is born 3. nursery - even though this is what people "typically" do, it was a big deal for us because we had to rearrange our entire upstairs.
*we both already have life insurance policies... did this years ago when we were married

We've done a whole lot of nothing so far. We only have 6 1/2 weeks to go, but when you're in as much pain as I am, it's hard to get ANYTHING done, much less focus attention on anything.

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
We definitely want to have a will made up, since we have assets but don't have a will now.
DH is going to open a college acct for DD so my parents and ILs can put in if they wish.
I have to think if I have thought of anything else. Can you provide us with a link to this Nest checklist? Sounds good!

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
A will and we have been struggling with guardianship. While there are a few people who are suitable it would be a big thing for someone to take two children in with their own kids already. This is one of our biggest concerns. My DH has life ins but I do not. I have to get that after babies are born.
Savings we are hoping we can start a nice nest egg from gifts as well as miney automatically taken out of our paychecks

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
All we did was life insurance and a 529 account. We really do need to do a will but everyone knows my parents are taking Grace and baby #2 with my sister as back-up.

We did the life insurance and our Wills. We also talked to the executors of our wills and discussed custody options in the event of any catastophic events. We set up accounts for DS as well.

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
We did a will just after we was born. And I have said it before, and will say it again, please do NOT pick your parents or your ILs as your child's guardians! Try to pick a sibling and/or someone more around your own age.
My sister is Christopher's guardian, she is 26 and still lives with my parents and is a grad student. But we know if (god forbid) something would happen to us now, my parents would help her out, but legally, she is his guardian.
Stepping down off my soap box....
We also have life insurance thru DH's job...and we have to still set up a 529

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
I work for a Life Ins Co. - so we've had Life Ins forever.
We HAVE TO get our will and health care proxies done
And we'll start a college fund.
Other than that, I really don't know what else I can do to prepare .......

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
I need to get going with things. I haven't done anything yet.
What I plan on doing: 1. Get Life Insurance 2. Find a pediatrician 3.Call Viacord about Cord blood storage
I did find out about my maternity leave at work. I just need to talk to my boss about my hours when I come back.

Re: What are you doing to really *prepare* for baby's arrival??
1. Trying to get extra sleep (failing miserably) 2. Spending extra quality time with Jake 3. Making an effort to have more date nights 4. Mentally working out the logistics of how to do the grocery shopping with 2 kids in tow and things of that sort 5. Searching for daycare solutions
