What are you getting before the baby is born vs after?
I'm starting to think about our nursery and what to buy.
Are you getting items like high chairs and toys that a newborn baby will probably not use right away?
Please let me know if I am missing anything that is necessary. I'm thinking of starting with the following:
Crib Dresser Stroller Car Seat Baby Bathtub Sanitizer Bottles Clothes
I was thinking of taking our future baby to the actual store to see what s/he likes when buying a swing, bouncer, playpen, etc.

My sister used the swing and bouncer from day 1. I would have that on hand right away, I don't think you want to be lugging a 5 day old to BRU to "test" swings, they don't know the difference anyways. I would do reseach and find a good swing and bouncer and have that on hand.
If you are planning on having a shower I would register for all these items including the high chair etc. There is a good chance you will get it all.

For DS we did not have the highchair or 2nd car seat until later
people actually bought them for us...we returned them and used credits for things we needed immediately and then bought the things we needed for later with our own $$

I agree. I'd definitely plan on having the swing and bouncer there at the beginning.
Are you having a shower? If so, I'd put all of the big ticket items on there. Virtually all of my big items, including those that I won't use for several months, were purchased. I'm going to go to BRU soon and start buying some of the smaller items that I'll need right away such as pack 'n play sheets, changing pad, bottles, etc.

I'm just going to register for the necessities and pull them out of the boxes as I need them - This is what we did. The only thing I got after was my pump, because they are not returnable and I wanted to make sure I could BF first before spending that much $$. I rented a pump for one month from an LC, and then when I knew I could do it I bought the one I have now.

I'm just going to register for all of it and see what we get. If need be we can live for a week or so w/o a swing or something but I'd like to be pretty much ready to go.

Yes, I suppose I will be having a shower. People have been asking me about it already.
I've never been to a baby shower ever. I was planning to buy all the big ticket items and let my friends bring small gifts like toys and clothing.

You will be surprised.... People like to get larger pieces such aas the swing, car seat and bouncer...... I've noticed at teh showers I've been to that all teh big ticket items are almost always purchased and usually the little stuff is left on the registry.
A registry is a big wish list. Put what you would like to have for the baby on there. If you get it great, if not, then you can decide whether or not you want to purchase it yourself! But give people the option. You will be surprised at how generous people get at baby showers!

I had never been to a baby shower either before mine. You never know how generous people will be. Family and friends were very generous and bought us a ton of stuff. I would register, see what you get at your shower, and then worry about what else you need to buy. You'll likely get a lot of the big items at your shower.

ditto. A lot of that stuff you'll get at your shower especially the larger stuff like car seats, highchairs, etc

Re: What are you getting before the baby is born vs after?
with DD#1 we had the basics and bought things as we needed them. off the top of my head i think the basics are:
- crib - pack n play/co-sleeper - portable swing - changing table/pad/changing supplies + first aid items - clothes - blankets & sleepsacks - bathtub - bottles - infant car seat - infant stroller frame/stroller
i'm sure i'm missing a few things, but not much...

Re: What are you getting before the baby is born vs after?
We registered for pretty much everything and fortunately we received everything at my shower that we needed. I think it's best to register for everything and see what you get, and you can always go out and buy the things that aren't bought. We didn't register for saftey gates for the house, we will buy these eventually once he's up and about.

Re: What are you getting before the baby is born vs after?
The swing and bouncer were very useful from day 1....Having a spot to put the baby down when you have to and want to keep them near-by as opposed to laying them in their bassinet etc.. ( to make something to eat, take a shower etc..) is a god-send ...I had plop places on every floor of my house , in as many rooms as possible...The swing was also great for naps in the beginning and can calm a fussy baby...Things like the exersaucer & high chair can wait ( unless you're having a shower, and then I'd put them on there though)
