This was one of the most moving books I've ever read. Are you doing a unit on the Holocaust? The Maus books were really good too, I bet high school kids would like the cartoon format of them.

Re: What are you reading with your class?
I just read Junie B. Jones to a 1st grade class yesterday, is it me or is it a bit inappropriate that the word "stupid" is on every other page??? am I overreacting?

Re: What are you reading with your class?
The Crucible --juniors Hamlet --seniors Oedipus the King --AP Lit seniors
If you think that's bad--last month I was reading... The Great Gatsby --1 group of juniors The Catcher in the Rye --1 group of juniors The Awakening --1 group of seniors Jekyll and Hyde --1 group of seniors and a poetry unit with AP Lit
all simultaneouly...
We provide the students with the books and we only have enough for one set per class...unless they're in the textbook like the ones I'm currently doing!

OMG So funny you mention this. I refuse to read this to my class (1st grade). I never recommend it to parents. I feel it sets a terrible example for kids. yes, words like stupid should not be in quality children literature. I'm all for a fun, silly book, but this is inappropriate in my opinion.
We are currently finishing up a nonfiction unit, so lots of nonfiction books right now.

I agree! I am not a big fan of them. I teach 1st grade and we are finishing Charlie and the chocolate factory tomorrow and starting The Tale of Desperux next week..my class last year LOVED that book!!! I can't wait to see how this batch responds to it.

Re: What are you reading with your class?
Currently doing my Black History Month poetry/short story unit: Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Countee Cullen, etc.
Doing this with 7th and 8th grade ESL students - it is one of my favorites. Next up is Freak the Mighty - already read adapted versions of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and A Christmas Carol.
My DH teaches 7th and 8th grade English and he is reading Shane and assorted plays.

Thanks I thought I was overreacting! I almost didnt know if I should actually READ that word or not, and you know how first graders respond it takes ten minutes just to recover from it and it also irks me to no end to read those books where the silly kid (maybe even Junie B) speak in totally incorrect english... I agree, I love silliness, but dont know ow much of it is good at such a young age in the context of a Language Arts lesson!

I actually say 'beep' when I come across a word like that in my read alouds. My class laughs but more like a giggle.
