What are your best packing tips?

DH and I want to get started.

I made a check sheet for the boxes so I can record the box #, contents, room it goes in, and check off that it has come off the truck.

I've done some reading online but I'm looking for your tips from experience! Thanks! I figured others could use this info. too!

Re: What are your best packing tips?

I take a picture of what is inside the box, so that if I have more than one "kitchen" box, I know which box has which content

I just label the boxes on all sides so when off the truck, I can see what it says. I Usually just write, what room the items are from.

Wrap your dishes and other fragile items in your extra towels.

Pack one box with a few sets of utensils, your toiletries , one change of clothes, and everything you will need for the first 24 hours. You will be exhausted and that way you only have to unpack that one box.

Leave your clothes in the dresser drawers and wrap the drawers tightly with heavy duty garbage bags. All you have to do is unwrap the bag and slide the drawers back in and your clothes are ready.

I labeled each box with a number. I then kept a spreadsheet as to what was in each box. Though we moved 1.5 years ago, there are still plenty of boxes down in our basement. If I'm looking for a particular item, I can easily determine which box it's in.

don't use newspaper to wrap breakables...if you want to use paper...buy the non printed paper...it makes such a mess...

Re: What are your best packing tips?

I pack up the boxes and then take a big black marker and write on the outside something like "KITCHEN - bowls, plates, coffee cups, glasses" and then "FRAGILE"

We started boxing up our closets right away - all the stuff we didn't use every day was boxed up first.

Oh yeah and we used Newspaper to wrap all of the breakable stuff.

One word of advice...don't store candles in the attic - its gets too hot and them all MELT...I found out the hard way Chat Icon Chat Icon

When packing clothes in your closet, lay a flat sheet out on your bed. Pile your clothes from the closet (w/hangers on) onto the sheet. Don't pile too high. Once you have enough on the sheet, grab the corners of the sheet and tie together. (This allows you to slip your arm through the sheet to carry the clothes). Continue this until your closets are empty. When you're ready to hang up, untie the sheet and grab clothes and hang.

I don't have any good tips but I do have a what not to do tip. Don't put all your heavy items in the largest box you have so that it's impossible to lift! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What are your best packing tips?

i pack all the clothes on the hangers in garbage bags (kind of like the sheet idea above) hang up the clothes and rip off the bags!!

also, pack heavy books etc. in your suitcases, then you can just wheel them!!

we did the same thing. Majorily of our boxes are in storage until the house is finished but it made things so much easier when looking for specific items.

OOh I like that one!!! I usually use garbage bags and just put a little hole in the top for the hanger part to stick through and tie a knot in the bottom so nothing falls out, but this sounds like an even better idea!

Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes this way every box can be lifted easily.
