Re: what are your opinions on spanking kids?
NO problem with it. DH does have a problem with it, so I haven't spanked since last Oct.
I do believe it was effective with Josh.
I am with this kid too many hours of the day to be saying the same thing over and over again...putting him in special chairs, setting timers. I am not a yeller. He does have a certain level of fear for me and I am okay with that. When I speak, he listens.

A slap on the behind or hand, yes.
A full-on beating spanking, no.

ITA! Verbal abuse is WAY worse that a smack on the butt...IMO.
I agree with this.

If someone could prove to me that its a tactic that works, I'd consider it. Its not something I think I could do, I'm sure its nothing DH could do. But, neither was CIO. So I've learned to say, never say never.

But spanking is not meant to be abuse. Apples and Oranges.
Is there a way to verbally exert authority, without yelling and calling names? I'm sure someone has done it? someone has studied it? but its probably something that takes thought and time to do. I wish I could be the parent that finds the right words when the day comes. Being physical in that way, is so not my thing.

There's a time for it...it doesn't happen often in our house, but it does happen when she is being really bad.

Just wanted to say I respect this opinion.
However, I was a spanked child and I too was very well disciplined. I never, not once, rebelled or spoke back to my father with sass. I found it shocking to see others do so.
To each their own, I guess
I will spank AJ if necessary. It will not be my first choice given my background with my mother and stepmother, but I will not be afraid of it.
She needs to learn every action has a reaction. Sometimes I am sure she will test her boundries with me. I hope to set her straight so we won't have to have constant punishments and discussions. Just put it straight and get it over with. That is a no-no, you will pay the price, don't do it again, end of story.
My father used to make us explain to him why we were going to get hit, how they'd warned us, asked us, threatened us and how we basically ignored it all. We didnt get hit right there and then either (we were older by now 6-8) we had to sit in our rooms and wait. Think about what we'd done and why we were gonna get hit. I tell ya, once was enough.
The "Look" said it all after that as did the phrase in public "Do you want to go to the bathroom" with the "Tone" Oddly enough I asked my Dad later if he ever hit us in public bathrooms he said "No but you sure thought I was going to, and besides.. you were a girl, how was I going to take you to the girls bathroom or the boys bathroom and do that?" 30yrs and it never dawned on me that he'd NEVER intended to follow through!
I can probably count the times he's hit me. I deserved them all and I learned too. THAT is what its not hypocritical to me. It was never done in anger it was done as a lesson.
I remember the first time I got into a fight I cried when my Dad asked me why I was crying so hard, I said "You said hitting is bad, I'm so sorry Daddy, but she hurt me" haha I was so afraid to get in trouble for hitting!!!!
