What are your thoughts on this - I saw a documentary....
about transgendered women in the prison system - so essentially, a woman except for one thing. One SIGNIFICANT thing
So, these TG's committed some type of crime - bank robbery for money for an operation, one was a young girl who got into a fight and hurt someone, and one woman was forced to drive a man to rob a bank, according to her....
The whole documentary was so fascinating but it focused on the following questions:
should pre-op TG women be placed with males in prison? Or with women?
Should TG's continue to receive their hormone drugs in prison - usually at the cost of the tax payer? These women have already been on hormone drugs for years, so not being on them is painful and detrimental in many ways.
The documentary went into how the TG women are visciously abused and violated in the male prison system - I mean - can you imagine what other inmates may do? The only option is to put TG women in solitary confinement to protect them, which is torture and punishing to them.
Also, there was the whole identity issue - but one can argue that if you commit a crime and go to jail, you are not entitled to the things that make you "you" - hence, the prison uniforms, etc....
What are your thoughts on all this?
I know some TG friends - both men and women - so I have been well learned in their personal opinions in TG issues - I'm just curious in the average everyday opinion....

Regarding the medication, it should be at the cost of the transgendered individual. I don't think taxpayers should pay for something that is not an "illness" or is not life threatening. They can pay it.
For where they should be housed, I suppose it would be their option on the original gender they were assigned OR solitary until they are post-op.
These answers are off the top of my head & probably could change depending on how much more thought I'd put into it.

Re: What are your thoughts on this - I saw a documentary....
This is a tough one b/c I personally feel that someone who commits a crime by default gives up privileges, one of which would be *voluntary* hormone drugs. Now I know that a sudden stop can be detrimental and unhealthy, but then IMO they should have thought of that before committing a crime.
As for where they are housed, I fell like men would be incredibly abusive to them, so that is out, but yet the women might not love it either and might be even more cruel. SO what do we (as a society) do...build a prison just for transgendered people?
And where does it end? At what point do we have to stop making concessions for people...

Re: What are your thoughts on this - I saw a documentary....
i saw this same documentary on WE yesterday. not all of it--but just the amount i saw--it was really terrible. i mean i know they are in prison for something--but it just seemed they were victims of so much rape and humiliation since many of them appear quite feminine among a population of men.
i'm not sure about whether the taxpayer should have to foot the bill for hormones while in prison. its a weird gray area--cause to some its not a true ailment they have while others would say they were born "wrong" and want to correct their gender. i think i lean towards the inmate having to find a way for these drugs vs. having taxpayers pay...but i'm not 100% sure

I agree with Nrthshrgrl.
Doesn't solitary confinement cost the taxpayers more anyway though....?

I agree with Barb - while not getting their meds would be a source of discomfort, I don't see any reason why taxpayers should pay for a voluntary enhancement. They can pay for it themselves, or have their family pay for it.
As for housing, however, to place them in a jail with men would constitute cruel and unusual punishment, as we all know what would happen. THAT, under the law, isn't constitutional so I see an argument for allowing them alternative housing. Let the choice be theirs - stay with their original gender, or solitary confinement.

.
Heres the thing though - since they suffer from Gender Identification Disprder - or whatever it is called, it is offcially in the DSM-IV - the diagnostic manual that lists all psychological disorders, so technically meds could be a part of it - like, a schizophrenic inmate would need meds to be provided.... Thats the other part of the argument... But then, they don't identify themselves as mentally ill, so its all a mess...

Thats exactly what all the law-related people were saying in the documentary - that there is not "other" when it comes to prison - theres male prison and female prison...
