Lead para:

The developers behind a controversial bid to build a mosque and Islamic center at Ground Zero have upped the ante in their audacious effort by applying for $5 million in 9/11 rebuilding funds -- outraging some family members and first-responders.

Chat Icon this whole thing enrages me. their whole reasoning for wanting that spot was that there isn't another mosque in downtown manhattan... there IS one, a very popular one. they say that it has nothing to do with 9/11 or ground zero and shouldn't be associated with any of those events... now they're going after 9/11 funds?

fukc them and fukc their mosque. they should have taken the offer that trump gave them and went to a different location.

Re: What are your thoughts on this (new info re:the proposed mosque at "Ground Zero"):

I understand that this is a hot button issue for a lot of people.

However, to me, this would be like saying that you can't build a Christian church of any kind in downtown Oklahoma City, because Tim McVeigh was a fundamentalist Christian, and used his beliefs to justify doing what he did.

The people who destroyed the WTC were not representing Islam as a whole. They were representing a crazy, radical sect of Islam. I see no reason why this of Muslims, who have no ties to any radical sect, should not be allowed to build a place of worship, regardless of how many other mosques are in the area. Last I checked we have freedom of religion in this country. Once you start whittling away at other people's freedoms, it is ASKING for someone to whittle away at yours. I am reminded of the very great poem that was written by a Protestant minister during World War II in Germany:

First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Edited for grammar.

Thank you. I completely agree. I also don't think The NY Post is the best place to get information on this subject.

I agree with THIS.

But why should they use 9/11 funds to build it? Chat Icon I see no connection there--why should they be entitled to 9/11 funds? They are not even at ground zero..I am confused.

If I understand it right, if you are rebuilding within a certain number of blocks of Ground Zero, you can apply for funds... to my knowledge it is a revitalization effort. They are building there. Why should they not receive funding, or at least be eligible to apply for it like everyone else?

I'm not opposed to the mosque. However, I am bothered by the attempt to get that money- wasn't one of the arguments in favor that it was privately funded (and could thus build where they wanted?) And they're not technically "rebuilding", right? It's a new building. Rebuilding money should go to businesses and organizations that were displaced.

"rebuilding" in the sense that they are helping the struggling businesses.

it's not to be taken necessarily in the literal sense.

right, it would revitalize the area - by bringing people to the COMMUNITY CENTER, the hope is stores, etc. would start to move in as well.

Re: What are your thoughts on this (new info re:the proposed mosque at "Ground Zero"):

I have no problem with the Mosque. I hope they build it and I hope they get the grant.

Ther was a Mosque on the 17th floor of the WTC.

There is a Mosque, right now, in the pentagon building.

And there is a Mosque, or sorts, about 2 blocks away from the proposed culteral center.

I see no disrespect with them building a CULTURAL CENTER right by the WTC. Just liek a JCC or YMCA.

I also know that people are VERY sensitive to this, and I understand why. I respect those opinions, but RESPECTFULLY disagree.

But this building is going up on a isde street with nothing there. The buildings are empty and abandoned. Kudus for bringing in jobs and commerce and LIFE to that area.

I celebrate the peacefull members of the Muslim faith. Just liek I celebrate the peaceful members of the Jewish and Christian faith.

For ME, there is no room to hate or protest this GOOD thing. There is no room to protest peacful people putting up a building that will do nothing but good for the area.

The buildings are not abandoned and empty. I worked on that block for several years and now work a few blocks away. The only building I know of that is empty, is the old Burlington Coat Factory building where the proposed mosque is going. There's a bar/food joint right next door, a clothing store, an Amish supermarket and occupied office buildings. Either way, I'm all for revitalizing the area. If they are eligible to apply, then go for it.

Agreed! Also, the report that I heard was that the $5mill asked for was not for rebuilding, but was for the public service programs (food kitchen, educational services for the community etc).

I also totally agree with what was posted above, but in response to the 9/11 part, I'm not inclined to believe a story from the Post.
I'd need a more credible source before actually questioning it seriously.
