I've been using this and I LOVE it, been using it for 2+ yrs now. I don't have acne prone skin, but I do break out here and there around the time I get my AF:

I try and use the Alpha Hydrox most of the time unless I have pimples/feel a breakout coming on.

I use Johnson and Johnson Purpose - the bar. I don't notice a difference.
I notice a difference when I use a toner though (sometimes I'm too lazy to do that extra step).
I have acne prone skin too. The toner helps more than any particular cleanser. I use Sea Breeze.
