Spinoff to tough children..

What do you think makes a "tough child?"

Megan is so easy going. I can take her anywhere at any time and she will adapt. She is a little shy but not clingy. She sleeps through the night and has been since about 2 months. She is ALWAYS in a good mood, never wakes up crying, always wakes up smiling and blowing us kisses.

BUT...

She hardly eats anything. She doesnt like anything. It takes her forever TO eat something. She never relaxes. Unless I trap her in the playpen or crib for a little while, she is ALWAYS on the go. She will NEVER cuddle..she wont sit with someone long enough to even give a hug. Shes EXTREMELY ACTIVE and all over the place ALL OF THE TIME. No matter how hard I try, she will not fall asleep by herself.

We went out to eat last night, she sat in that highchair for almost 2 hours without a peep. Everyone was commenting on what a good baby she was. Which I totally agree in that respect and of course because she is mine I tend to think she is perfect but after an entire day of chasing her and going to bed exhausted at night, I wonder if she is tough in that way or just rambuctious?

What do you think makes a tough child?

Having the opposite traits that you described above. DS is not easy going, highly emotional and sensitive. When he was little going anywhere was like traveling with a time bomb, not knowing when it would go off. Was up many a night, we had to let him CIO for a very long time. Mood swings like you wouldn't belieive. He can turn it on and off in a second. Often wakes up from his naps crying and cranky and takes a good 45 minutes for him to snap out of it.

Re: What constitutes a "tough child?" Spinoff..

So many different things I guess can classify "tough".

But, for ME...honestly....a child that does not stop running/hurting himself...a kid that can't be placed in a crib or playpen without screaming his head off...to ME this is a tough child.

He is not talking yet, so that makes it even harder.

BUT...he is a wonderful napper/sleeper/eater and loves loves loves to be outdoors and will laugh and run outside all day if you let him. He just doesn't like being cooped up at all, and during the winter months makes for a very tough baby.

Teething like he's eating razor blades didn't help much either!! Lol!

Johnny is so so similar to her!! I think its because I chase him all day that I think he's tough. Other people tell me how great he is..and while I agree (who doesn't think their own kid is great?) I am so tired all the time and it just seems that other kids sit for a longer period of time and give their parents a break...

to me a tough child is one that

Cries and is hard to console
hates her car seat / stroller / crib
does not eat well
does not sleep well

as they get older
tantrums
not listening, etc

It's so funny because Johnny is consoled pretty easily, great eater, great sleeper most of the time, loves stroller and carseat...

yet...I feel he is tough, lol!! Maybe I need to step back and stop feeling that way. I think he just wants me to move WAY more than i feel like it...

I wonder what type of toddler he will be?!?!

Re: What constitutes a "tough child?" Spinoff..

hmmm...this is a really good question. My mom said he is a tough toddler (waddler) Chat Icon However, he is so easy when we are out, he's pretty easy going (as long as the going is his way) and he is a great eater. However, he is VERY subborn and wants what he wants when he wants it and there is no talking him out of it. If you take something away, he will cry for over an hour!! there is no distracting him. He is into EVERYTHING.

So in some ways he's tough in others he's not.

You have just described my child. She hardly eats. I don't think it's because she doesn't like it, she just doesn't want to eat it. I don't fret too much about it. I don't offer her choices or waste too much time when she's throwing food on the floor. If she refuses, she's done. When she does want to eat, she does pretty well.

Falling asleep is a crapshoot. We put her down and she's either whining or screaming. We have a set bedtime but I think sometimes she hits that "window" earlier in the evening because she just exhausted herself playing so hard that she's overtired and screaming when it comes to the actual bedtime.

I don't say she's a tough child though. She's pretty easy compared to what I've seen.

Noreen, my Andrew is exactly how you describe Megan. He is soooo easy going, was always a good baby, slept well, ate well, played on his own, never got into anything, went with the flow, did as I said. He still is good, although he does have moments, then again, what toddler doesn't??

Everyone always said my #2 would be payback. Well.... not so true. Lauren was a good child her first year. Rarely cried, ate well, slept all night. So I did have 2 great babies.

then she turned 1 and all hell broke loose Chat Icon Chat Icon She is a terror. She is into everything, cries all day long if she doesn't get what she wants, is into everything, including a lot of trouble Chat Icon She makes my blood boil some days. They are so different. She is a tough child. Very tough to get anything accomplished when all she does is cry all day long.

My Jacob has been tough. Cried incessantly for the first 4 months, never slept, napped for 20 min. Couldnt handle cereal or baby food until 7 months old. Didnt sleep thru the night until 1. Still needs assistance falling asleep for naps and bedtime (he is 2) And now he doesnt eat.. ANYTHING.. EVER...sorry, i take that back, he eats bread with butter and mac and cheese. And sometimes he wont even eat that. But his personality now is so happy. Thats the only thing that improved. Yup he's been TOUGH alright. And to the next child I say... "BRING IT"!!!! Chat Icon
