What could this be?

Boogie has been making this really odd snorting sound through his nose- like he can't breath- I wish you could HEAR me make the sound, it's the only way you would truly know what it is...but I am hoping someone knows!

Ebony used to get this....the vet said it was like having a cold. But, I would call the vet anyway. Does your dog make a hacking sound at all, even just once a day? If so then you might want to check for kennel cough...

well fortunately he is going to the vet tomorrow for a shot- so I will be able to mention it

after looking up some stuff online it says it could be "reverse sneezing"
that seems to be the symptoms he is having...

it is really scary when he does it...

It also could be the start of kennel cough...he did hack a bit yesterday but hasnt since..but he was at the daycare/kennel last weekend ...

Yes, reverse sneezing!! I couldn't remember what it was called. Scout used to do it too but he doesn't anymore. He had kennel cough, the vet said the two weren't related, but that's what made me think of it.

Mention it to the vet tomorrow and just be aware if he starts to hack at all, even just once a day. Good luck!!

went to the vet...he got his shot-

and we spoke about this "honking" that he is doing...

he said it could be reverse sneezing or a soft palette-very normal in shih tzus-

since it is more bothersome than it is life threatening, we have the option to do nothing or to do surgery to reduce the length of the soft palette...

I have to talk to DH- but I would hate to put him through surgery for something that isn't going to cause long term problems and is not life threatening- I have to see what Dh says...

he did give me some meds to see if it is allergy related-we shall see...

Any dog with a truncated/shortened sinus cavity (pugs, shih tzu's etc.) are at risk for a number of breathing issues. My Pug snores when he is awake sometimes. Usually I give him a shot of saline up his nose & it goes away (this is what the vet recommended).

Hopefully the vet can give you a good remedy!

My dog (the lhasa) does this every so often I usually just rub him and calm him down, I once told the vet about it and he told me too, that this is common with this breed, but it is not life threatening.

sophie does this every so often - as the vet so kindly put it, her snout is "a little pushed in and not quite right" - so she gets a little sneezy at times.

as distressing as it is to hear, it's likely harmless and will pass.
