What do I do about references?

My interview with the Dept. of Education is next week and I need to have a list of references. Problem is, I can't ask anyone at my firm because they have no clue I'm looking elsewhere and I don't want to jeopardize my employment. I graduated law school 2 years ago, so I feel weird about asking my old professors. Who do I ask? And on my resume I listed as work experience my prior life as an HR manager at a large company for 5 years. Should I get a reference from there even though it was 5 years ago?

Re: What do I do about references?

what about a client of yours that you interact with and trust?

what about an old coworker that went on to another firm?

or any attorneys you know as friends that can help you out?

Hmmmm... there is one attorney that I worked closely with who left the firm a few months ago - I guess I should ask him. And DH's partner is an attorney - we know him quite well - though he can't speak to my work product because I've never worked WITH him. But I'll ask anyway! Thanks!

I would ask for a reference from 5 years ago. I would not go to a client until your offer is more solidified.

I think you're a smart cookie, does that count?Chat Icon

ask the professors.
they really shouldn't call until the job is pretty much yours, but not everyone is ethical like that.

Re: What do I do about references?

I was in the same boat as you when I applied for jobs 3 years ago. I used my sister's FIL who is a partner at a big firm in Phili to be a reference for me. He didn't know me professionally, but he was my reference. I also used an employer I had in law school about 5 years prior as my other reference. I ended up getting offered the job, but I didn't take it.

And if all else fails, I'm an attorney. I'll be your reference. Chat Icon
