What do we think about canned veggies?

I had a can of baby carrots in the cabinet and heated them up for DH and I to go with our meal the other night. I gave DD a few and they were so soft so I cut them up and she loved them! So easy.... but what do you think about canned veggies? Is anything added to them to give them shelf life? Is it the same as/similar to giving frozen? I forgot to look at the can before I threw it out. Are these a no no? WDYT. Any info would be great!

I think that canned veggies are very high in sodium, where as frozen or fresh veggies don't have that at all.

My mother keeps telling me to try them with DS, but I just at all the sodium in canned veggies.

I'd love to hear what other moms think too.

IMO, Fresh is best, then frozen, but I would give canned in a pinch. I usually don't buy them. Its not gonna kill them KWIM? Not sure if there is something added to them but I would imagine there would have to be to make them shelf stabile.

They are higher in sodium. If she likes fresh, do fresh. It's hard to cut the habit processed (with all the sodium).

That's "IF" she likes fresh!

Ah, I did not know that. Do they add salt to the water that the veggies are in?

Frozen is better then canned, but honestly, if you're getting them to eat veggies, I say do whatever.

I use them sometimes but I only buy the ones that have no salt added. Fresh is best then frozen but sometimes I just use the canned.

i don't do canned veggies at all b.c 1. they contain sodium 2. most important of all, canned veggies lose most of their nutritional value whereas frozen veggies are picked at the peak of ripeness and frozen.
no nutrition /vitamins are lost and i find the taste to be superior.

Frozen are better.
The cans also contain BPA, which doesn't thrill me.

sometimes frozen is actually better than fresh.

and most canned veggies use too much sodium.

carrots I wouldn't do b/c a nice long roast or boil could get the desired softness.

but I absolutely HATE the taste of frozen peas. I don't really like them much at all, but if I do eat them, they need to be canned. I buy the organic canned peas or LeSeur.

for the longest, I was making frozen peas for luce. but now that he's on table foods and I have to eat it too, canned peas on his pasta a few times a month will not do too much harm.

I try to avoid canned vegetables because some companies use BPA in the lining of the cans.

i don't use canned, i just stock up on trader joe's frozen. their haricots vert are the best!

I haven't tried.

I do fresh if its in season, like no carrots in winter.

Frozen for mostly the rest of the time.

I don't like the idea of artifically 'ripening' my fruits and veggies so they are 'fresh' at the store. I once heard/saw a story and it stuck with me. I mean after all how is it we have such fruits and veggies so 'fresh' yet totally unavailable for so cheap?

I'd say 90% of what we eat is frozen veggies

Don't like them never have. Way too much salt and I don't like the smell. I can smell canned corn at school from a mile away.

I never tried canned, always do frozen or fresh, I'd stay away from the canned because of the preservatives

THe only canned vege a use is corn. Other then that I buy fresh and frozen. Canned are filled with too many perservatives.
