What do you consider a "big" house?
What size do you consider a single family house to be "big".
Something where you think "Wow, that's a big house!" when you drive by, or hear about it.
Now that my house is 3000 sq/ft, I don't think that's very big any more.....

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
My house is a little over 4000 square feet which sounds big, but when you are inside it really doesn't seem so big. I really think that it depends on when the house was built. Older houses have lower ceilings and they don't usually have two story foyers or any two story rooms for that matter, which makes them feel smaller than a new home that has higher ceilings and a more grand appearance. From the outside though my house looks like a big house.

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
Well since our house is less than 700 sq feet...everything is a big house.

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
My house would be considered by most on the "small" side, 2000 sq ft., but to me, i came from a TEEEENY city apt. 600 sq. ft, so for me im like WOWWWWWWWW what do i DO with all this space! In all honesty, the first thing i think about when i see a huge house is "cleaning that thing must be a beeeotch"...its all relative i guess.

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
I think homes that are 3000 sq ft or bigger are big houses.
Frankly, I wouldn't want to clean anything bigger.
It's all relative. If you live in a big house, you get used to it and don't think it's big anymore.
I grew up in a 1500 sq ft house. My house is about 1700 sq ft. It's fine. It's certainly not big. But to some people who live in a smaller home, it's big.

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
Houses with big living areas (as opposed to bedrooms) always feel bigger to me. My house has an oversized living room, den and kitchen and it feels so much larger than some houses I have looked at in NC that had 1000+ more sf (but most of it was in the form of extra bedrooms)
Also wide houses always look 'big' to me versus deep houses.

I would say 3000 sq ft is a big home to me. Our house is about 1700 sq ft. I think it looks a lot bigger from the outside.

Question... if you have an attached garage, that isn't considered in the sq foot of the home is it?

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
The square feet doesn't matter to me at all....what matters is the layout.
If there are a million small rooms, all closed off from each other...the house feels small to me.
If there is an open floorplan and a great flow...that makes the house feel larger to me.
Goldenrod...any new pics of the house?

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
Your house!
Wider houses also seem bigger to me. form the outside, in the insidoe, lots of room, seemto make a house bigger to me, not choppy & cramped as you might expect.
My Ils house seems so big to me, b/c there are so many room on the 1st floor-- the house must be huge, b/c there are so many different places to put things--but it is probably about 2200 sq. feet, so I'm sure many peopel don't consider that big & it's not big at all considering some of the other houses in nearby neighborhoods.

Big to me is over 3000 sq ft.
My house now is 1800 sq. ft. and it just seems so small to me. I blame it on the layout, I am not a fan of hte hi-ranch we live in

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
I feel like my house is a great size, its an open floor plan, i am not sure about the sq footage but i would say around 2500-3000 sq feet plus we extended the basement with movie room office, gym etc

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
My first house was 1800sq/ft. When we were looking to buy our current home, we only looked at houses with more than 3000sq/ft.
Our current home has 3250 sq/ft plus an additional 1500sq/ft in the basement. For me this is perfect.

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
For around here I'd say 3000 is a big house.
But like Beth said above houses down south are on average that size if not bigger.
My cousin lives in a 7000 square foot home in a suburb of Atlanta. 5000 of it finished and 2500 of it is basement.
Amazing to look at but a LOT to clean if you ask me!

I have been thinkig about this alot actually- I might need a cleaning lady 2 times a week - instead of 2 times a month
but I am sure half the rooms wont even have furniture for years!

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
It's relative. If you have a big family or just a lot of stuff, a 3000 sq ft house might not seem that big.
For my family, I think anything over 4000 sq ft would be big for us.
I also think that if you have a big house, you probably won't need to clean some rooms very often. I live in a tiny apt now and I'm cleaning every day because every sq inch is being used daily. If 4 out of my 7 bathrooms aren't used that often, they won't need a thorough cleaning as much. My mom owns a housecleaning business and some of her clients only have certain rooms cleaned once a month while everything else is cleaned weekly or biweekly.

Re: What do you consider a "big" house?
I agree it's about the layout, not just square footage.
A 2000 sft home with an open layout and fewer but more spacious rooms can feel big while a 3000 sft 5 bdrm home can feel small.
Our home is 3k sft and does not feel really big to me. It feels like a good size, but not really really big.

You bring up an excellent point that I didn't really think of.
My cousin's house has so many bathroom and bedrooms b/c they were the first to move OOS and so they anticipated their parents coming to visit and so they gave each room it's own bathroom.
I'm sure now that more family lives around them, they're not using those rooms nearly as much.

This is true (at least for me) My house is close to 4000sq ft and since for now it's just my husband and I, we don't use alot of the house. I have an expanded ranch and we really only use the main level and the finished basement. I do have a cleaning lady and only have her clean the upstairs part of the house every other visit. She comes twice per month, so every other week, she will dust and vaccum upstairs.
