What do you consider to be a "Middle Class" income?
I keep hearing that the middle class will be eventually pushed off of Long Island. What is considered to be a middle class income today?

Re: What do you consider to be a "Middle Class" income?
I found a site that surveyed NYS government officials and it says this
"leaders surveyed think that it actually takes $75,000-$135,000 annually for a family of four to have a middle-class standard of living in New York metropolitan area. For a single individual, the middle class range is $45,000 - $90,000."
Having health insurance, owning a computer with internet access, holding a full-time job, and sending children to a quality public school are essentials of a middle-class standard of living in New York according to the leaders surveyed.

I would have to say I agree with these numbers. Maybe even a little more for a family of four.

These numbers are so broad. I think there is a pretty big difference between making $75K a year and $135K a year. I would have guessed middle class income would be at the end of that spectrum. But that would be based on buying a home in the market as it is today. For a family of four (if owning a home is included in this) having purchased their home more than 7-8 years ago can make a huge difference.

ITA. It makes a huge difference in when a person purchased their house. In order to afford a middle-income house these days you better make enough to buy a $350,000 house with taxes of $7000, in eastern suffolk county. I would say at least $150,000 a year to be middle class these days.

I think a combined income of between 150 - 200K per year.

Re: What do you consider to be a "Middle Class" income?
Considering the prices of houses now, that number might have to be higher. We are in the lower part of that number BUT we bought our house 11 years ago and have a very low mortgage (compared to most people). We are able to live on that (not much disposible income but we will not starve). I had said on another thread that we made a combined income of $35,000 when we bought our house so it is a totally different animal.

Re: What do you consider to be a "Middle Class" income?
for a family or married couple I would consider $100-$125 per year total family income middle class. Scary isin't it?
For a single I would say $60-75,000.

Do you consider that to me for someone who owns a home?

For a single person I would say $45-100,000. Enough to live in your own apt, have a phone, cable, car, health insurance. Middle class doesn't mean vacations twice a year, the nicest cars, the best neighborhood, etc. I know people on $40,000 who are definitely doing fine.

On LI I would think over 100K could live middle class but then again I don't know how middle class we would be if we moved back to LI making that salary.
100K for a family of 4? I think it depends on your definition of middle class. The gov site's definition is having health insurance, owning a computer with internet access, holding a full-time job, and sending children to a quality public school. I think that is definitely possible on $100,000 for a family. It doesn't even mention home ownership.

Re: What do you consider to be a "Middle Class" income?
it's just the 2 of us and we make about 100k a year combined. we both work full-time, we both have health insurance, have our own cars, computer with internet (obviously ), each have a cell phone, go on vacation each year etc etc etc and i consider us to be middle class.

Re: What do you consider to be a "Middle Class" income?
According to STAR rebate for 2005, that I just got in the mail- for the Town of West Islip, middle class is considered under $250,000. If you make higher than that amount, you don't qualify for the rebate.
