What do you do for a constipated newborn?
Brody hasn't really pooped since Thursday. I called the Doctor and switched from Enfamil Lipil to Good Start, and I had to stick a q-tip with vaseline in his butt. Still, all he does is cry and grunt, and only produces a pea sized poop that is stuck.
I feel soo bad for him. The office is open tomorrow (Sunday), I think I will call back and bring him in.
Did anyone else have this problem, what did you do????
Thanks

Re: What do you do for a constipated newborn?
Did you do a gradual switch to GS?
We didn't have this problem when we switched, but I have hear people giving the baby water, pear juice, prune juice...Also try the thermometer trick...although you said you did the q-tip..
Sorry, its so sad to see them this way

Re: What do you do for a constipated newborn?
Ugh I had this problem for a long time. Had to eventually switch formulas because nothing worked! Now she's on Alimentum and pooping like a champ!!!
Ask your dr...lots of people say water but for some reason mine didn't want me to give her water.

Re: What do you do for a constipated newborn?
My ped told me to give him sugar water. I believe it was 1/8 tsp sugar dissolved in 1 ounce of water.
That didnt work so they told me to get suppostiories. Seamus was only 5 days old! I did the suppository and he pooped 1 hour later!

Water. only a few sips after each feed. (that was all she would take) it seemed to work ok.

Re: What do you do for a constipated newborn?
I would use a thermometer to loosen things up when she was a newborn, then when she was a bit older, I would give some pear or prune juice

Re: What do you do for a constipated newborn?
We've been adding a 1/4 ounce of prune juice to the morning bottle and a 1/2 ounce water to 2 other bottles. That has been making DS go each day. For immediate relief my dr. said the thermometer or suppository. Def check what your ped says to do.

Re: What do you do for a constipated newborn?
We tried everything... the thermometer (doctor says should work immediately), prune juice (2 oz water, 1 oz juice), etc.
Nothing worked. It wasn't until we switched formulas, that he worked it out. Now he goes every day around the same time each day.
Good luck! I know how hard it is when you can see them in pain and there's nothing you can really do.
