What do you do with a 10 day old?

Katie is 10 days old...what do I do with her? I mean I know how to care for her and feed her, but when she wakes up from her nap and is wide awake looking around, what do I do with her?

Sometimes I put her in the bouncy (vibrating) seeat, sometimes I hold her or put her on the couch and talk to her. What else can I do? We go for short walks around the block too but I can't do much becuase Im still pretty sore from my c/s.

Just enjoy this stage where she'll lay on your chest, and just cuddle in your arms, before you know it- they become so independent, and just wanna play on the floor, like a big kid!

You're doing great. There isn't a lot to do with them at this point. Holding her and talking to her is great.

Do you think if I hold her like that she'll get too used to it and want it all the time or not be able to fall asleep without being held?

Truthfully at this age- I dont think there is such a thing of spoiling them, or creating bad habits....

I did this with Ryan- and use to get flamed by my IL's all the time- because they thought I was forming bad habits, and today my boy still loves to be held, but goes to anyone, and loves to play by himself...

Honestly- it goes so fast, and this time is so precious, even if it was habit forming- I would still do it... its totally worth every minute!!!

That's all I did with Bella and now she falls asleep better by herself in her crib (she's 3 months now) I wouldn't worry about it. My ped. said that until their 6 months old, you can't hold them enough- they need to feel secure and loved at this age. He also said that you can't make an independent child without making them feel secure first. His advice seems to be working! When she was a few weeks old I would put her in her bouncy seat or swing when I needed to get things done. Otherwise I'd hold her forever. Like the others said, cherish this time.. it' won't last long!

The only thing you should be doing with a 10 day old is adoring her - which it sounds like you already do. You can talk to her while you do things. It's also never too early for belly time.

just give her the attention and love that your giving her already. And just like princessmaris said enjoy this time cuz beforeyou know it she won't want to be cuddled so much. I did this with my DD and at night when we wat ch some tv she will come and sit on my lap and want to be cuddled. but most of the time she just wants to paly and do what she wants to do. they grow up so fast

You can play with rattles with her, do tummy time, sing to her, take her on walks in the buggy, lay her on the "gym" mat to look around and listen to music. The swing too is good, if that is something she likes.

Enjoy it now cause when they can crawl they are all over the place, all I do now is run after Julia cause she is always getting into something.

Enjoy the time. It is not possible to spoil them at this age.

Re: What do you do with a 10 day old?

I don't think you could spoil her at this age, and they need that close contact so much right now. She spent 9 months in your womb, so now she just needs that skin to skin contact because it is what is the most comfortable for her.

To make things more interesting for you (because it does get boring as wonderful as it is) you can take her outside, either in the stroller or the snugli/carrier, and talk to her all about the world. I did this a lot in October when Emily was born whenever there was a nice day -- and just described everything that we saw and heard ... Ex: That was a motorcycle that you just heard, it's like a bicycle but it has an engine and goes very fast, that was an orange tree we just walked under, the leaves turned orange.

It sounds so corny and stupid and she probably didn't care what I said, just liked the sound of my voice, but to me I felt productive -- like I was setting her up for later language sucess.

Can you tell I'm a teacher?

Thanks Girls! I needed the reassurance and the other suggestions as well!!

Today was a good day for us. Katie was very fussy yesterday and up the entire night before - with gas. So far Mylocin seems to have helped her so Im so thankfu for that. I just hope it stays this way!

I agree with what the other ladies said - just adore her - hug her - make her feel secure.

This is the time to bond with her - let her get to know your scent and voice, keep her close to you and talk to her about EVERYTHING!Chat Icon

Sounds like you have a great pediatrician to give such sound advice.

Re: What do you do with a 10 day old?

I did a lot of sticking my tongue out. I read that they like this. My mom thought it was bad, b/c I was teaching him to stick out his tongue. but he had no clue about tonguesticking at 1 year, so I guess I didn't do any permanant damage! LOL

baby gym, swing and tummy time are all good options too (after snuggling that is)
