I feel it should be illegal as well.. Isnt that fetus a minor? Also drinking.. If a parent gives a minor alcohol isnt it illegal? Its part of a childs bill of rights "Neither parent will smoke tobacco materials inside structures or vehicles occupied at the time by the child". I would think a womb is inside structures.. But then this is opening up the entire law of rowe vs wade. Its not illegal for a woman to abort her child so I guess its ok to smoke a cigrette. Its pretty sad.
ETA: This bill of rights is for children of divorced parents.. i guess its through family court. not sure
Yes, I hear you. I hear everyones concerns. However, even making these things illegal will not prevent people from smoking while pregnant. We cant prevent teens from smoke, from drinking. When abortion was illegal, we couldnt prevent women from doing that.
*Before I get flamed for any of my posts....
My main point is this ...
In a perfect world all pregnant women would never engage in anything that can be harmful to their babies and I wish they didnt  but in reality, it happens and I dont feel like anyone should be condemned for it. I totally understand why this enrages people and gets them very upset. I do. I see both sides.

another vote for knowing that there ARE doctors who have told women to keep smoking... yes, he said reduce the number of cigs and to go with the "lights".
i have a cousin who is a chain smoker, she went to lights and reduced the number she smoked by more than half when she was pregnant. and i was there when the dr told her to reduce her smoking but knew she wouldn't quit.
as far as the OP, don't say anything. as someone else said, she's hormonal... you don't want to p!ss her off

I can't disagree with you. Even if it stopped a few people, it would be worth it. It would be unlikely that the people who are so addicted would stop becuase its illegal. I think people who would normally quit. I honestly feel it may not be a choice, I think some poeple can't quit

Frankly, I am an 8.5 month pregnant woman who is a non-smoker, a non-drinker and a non-recreational drug user. I teach kids born with FAS and born positive to drugs and more than likely, have had moms who smoke. I know what happens all too well when women abuse their bodies when they are pregnant.
But I'd still tell you to mind your own damn business.

exactly, she was told to quit though, not to continue because of shock to a baby, there are no physical symptoms when someone stops smoking, other then feeling uptight which can then increase your BP, but it doesn;t make physical sym appear, 1st comes the psychological impact. NO doctor would say "keep smoking", they may say to gradually decrease to decrease your own stress levels of quitting.

In my experience, in my first pregnancy, I was a smoker before I found out I was pregnant. A couple of weeks before I found out, my cigs tasted off and funky. I figured it was a bad pack. The next pack tasted even funkier. They tasted disgusting.
I quit.
Found out I was pregnant and when the doc asked the "Do you smoke?" question I told her I JUST quit and told her why.
She said many women experience the same, and reasons that it's your body signaling that you need to quit for other reasons (like a baby)
I found that interesting. All that aside, I don't like it - but it's not my choice. I can only choose things for myself.

i've bought i don't know how many packs of cigs in my life and not one has ever been for myself.
if i'm out, i'll ask my mom if she needs anything; if i'm on my way to a friend's house for a get together, i ask if they need anything - if they say cigs, i'm not happy about them smoking, but i'll pick up a pack.
you have NO idea who she's buying for

I wouldn't say anything. Especially if i was a man and wanted my balls to remain intact.
On a side note, last week i had to run into the beer distributor and leave DH in the car with DD because DH left his wallet home, so i was the one with the license and credit card. I looked really classy walking out of there with a 12 pack of Amstel in hand.
I think i got lucky though and no one from LIF saw me, since i haven't seen a thread about it yet.

Part of the reasoning of Roe vs Wade is that life does NOT begin at conception. A fetus is not a person - YET, so no, they are not a minor, and no, they don't have rights.

yeah, I saw one just yesterday. It makes me angry but I wouldn't say a word, it's not my place to tell them & it wouldn't change their mind anyway I'm sure. They already know it's harmful but they don't care.

I knew I didnt spell Roe right And that was exactly my point when i brought it up.. That has been the arguement for centuries..
When does the fetus actually become a child? At what month of the pregnancy? I believe it is not legal to have an abortion at a certain point of the pregnancy? (not sure) They could make it illegal at that point. Just a different outlook. I suppose if she is going to terminate the pregnancy it doesnt matter what she does to her body. The fact is that baby is receiving smoke.
ETA: i forgot to mention ... I would not say a word to a pregnant woman if I saw her smoking. Its not my way.. But I still believe that it should be illegal.

I was a smoker before I got preggo and DH is a smoker. There were quite a few times he asked me to pick up a pack for him on my way home, which I did. I also picked up wine & beer either for him or a get together. You don't know if it was for her and even if it was, it's not really your business.
And, I can't believe so many people have seen preggos smoking, I don't think I've ever seen one out in public.

I never smoked a day in my life- but it's none of my business what others do.
Ok, I have NEVER heard this one, I am actually sitting at work right now in an ER and showed 3 docs and they were all hysterically laughing. Maybe that is what the person told you, but that woudl not be medical advice, to keep on smoking, it;s not liek you go through horrible physical synptoms like when you stop drinking.
I would totally ask if it was for them, and if it was I would say somehting to them. Disgusting and selfish and a pretty good indicator at where her priorities will be with that child
Actually, I have heard this as well. Guess all doctors are different. lol I would never though!

I have never seen a pregnant woman smoke. Would I say something? no, but I would not be able to NOT look at them in shock and disgust.
I get how addictive smoking is, as a smoker who is always trying to quit, I GET it, but I would judge the hell out of a smoking pregnant woman.
In almost all areas I am laissez-faire, but this really hit a nerve with me.
