what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

I'm still amazed everytime I see these people. I feel bad saying this but I think it's kind of gross to physically have that many children. DH says it's child abuseChat Icon What are your opinions?

To each his own. I think they're a little weird but they seem happy. I heard I think from this site too that they are expecting #17 Chat Icon

She makes all the their cloths and they shop at a costco type of place for food.

I really can't imagine it being healthy for her body to go through that so many times. Plus she is young I think just under 40. I also feel bad for the kids because they have so many chores and it doesnt seem like they can enjoy being a child.

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

My sister-in-law's friend just had her 12th. They are very religous as well. I think many of these extra large families seek admiration within their communities. When a religous community values procreation, those who procreate the most, are admired for thier "godliness." I think religous families who have many children because they beleive it is God's will, is fine and that is what they believe. However, I think enough is enough and there comes a point where is seems attention searching. For example - the Duggars put thier family on TV.

I wonder if all of her pregnancies resulted in a baby or if she had any losses between them?? I just can't imagine it. To each his own.

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

I know a family that has 15 children. My oldest daughter grew up with their second oldest. Each and every one of their children was loved and wanted and well taken care of. I can remember the looks and rash comments that were made every time she announced that she was having another child. She had told me at one point that I was the only one who ever congratulated her. I'm not saying that everything was rosey. They have had their hands full, but, it was the life they chose. They took care of their children and did a fine job. Some went to college, some went into the military. They never went on public assistance. With all this woman had to manage, she was always the first to volunteer her time at school. It always annoyed me when people would talk behind their backs and made nasty comments about how many children they had. It was none of their business. They weren't asking them for any help and they should have kept their mouths shut. I admire this woman. It's not something that I could have done, but, she handled it all with grace and dignity.

I saw that show on TV which is what made me think of it. DH was making fun of me that I complain about having 1 and being pregnant with another. Chat Icon

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

Personally, I would never have 16 children, but that wasn't abnormal at one point in time. And let's face it, if I had 16 children, I damn well would get my arse a tv special to help feed them all! I honestly don't know what the big deal is. If they love and care for one another, then who cares how many babies they have?

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

Thats an insane amount of children - thats like a classroom of kids!

Also, I think statistically about disabilities... they must have a few kids with disabilities in there, if all the CDC reports are correct....

I knew of a lot of Hasidic families who had at least 10 kids, so its quite common in extreme religious communities - but still... You have to wonder if the kid just slips out after one push at this point!!!

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

My Dad is one of 15 and the answer to the AP who asked how they clothe and feed all those children is that my Grandmother really didn't worry about that. She was one of those people who believed quite literally that God would provide and he did so who knows? She also had most all of them at home They're all incredibly close (3 of my Aunts ended up buying houses on the same block as each other) and most went on to have large families by current standards.

ETA: as far as the amount of time you'd have to spend pregnant, my Nan was pregnant with her youngest at her oldest child's wedding Chat Icon. It's one thing to have a BM who is expecting in your bridal party, imagine the MOB is showing at the wedding Chat Icon .Chat Icon

If they are happy and can manage, good for them! Who cares? If you think about it...there are couples out there who shouldn't be the parents of the one they have, then there is this family happily managing 16.

I do however, like the last poster said, have to say god bless her uterus! The babies probably come out in one sneeze by now!! Chat Icon

As one of 7 (6 surviving), and my mom being from a family of 9, I welcome and love large families.... But I can't imagine a family of 16! I mean I stress what to do about a car if we have a 3rd? I mean, in all seriousness, do they drive a school bus? A van usually holds at most 15 passengers!

I always find it so sad in families of that size that the older kids don't have a childhood, their childhood is spent helping to raise the younger children. But, to each his own.

I also dont believe in $$ being as big an issue as people make it.
My mom's words are always, you feed 4, you feed 6 what's the difference" (or whatever #s are in discussion).
In many way's life is what you make of it. Many people (not on these boards, just people we encounter in life in general) act like "having a child cost so much money" yet MUCH of that money is NOT a requirement (wayyy overpriced clothes and gadgets for babies & kids).

I LOVE big families Chat Icon

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

I have the answer to the clothing issue with the Duggers..they go to the Goodwill store when everything is half price and stock up on polo shirts and jeans for the boys and dresses and tops for the girls..and whatever shoes are in good shape.

My husband thinks they are nuts to have so many kids but then again most people think we are nuts to have 5 with one on the way.

As far as the Duggars go they all seem happy and well cared for..that is all that we want for our children..

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

I found this on a web-site:

Dear Friend,

When Michelle and I first married, we thought we might have one or two children. Four years into to marriage, we had our first child. After that, Michelle went back on the birth control pill. She ended up getting pregnant while on the pill and had a miscarriage.

We were so grieved. We did not know that sometimes the pill allows you to get pregnant but then causes a miscarriage. We thought we could set our own timetable for having children, for example- when we were ‘financially able,’ or when we ‘had all our ducks in a row.’

We read in the Bible that God says that children are a blessing and a reward from Him (Psalms 127:1-5). We had been rejecting His gifts. At that point, we prayed and asked God to forgive us and we gave Him this area of our lives. We said, ‘Lord, help us to love children the way that you love children, and Lord we want to receive each one as a gift from you.’

At the same time we made this commitment, we attended a Financial Freedom Seminar conducted by Jim Sammons. Mr. Sammons challenged us from God’s Word in Romans 13:8 to ‘owe no man anything but love.’ So we purposed to get out of debt and stay out of debt.

We have seen God do miracles, as He has multiplied our children, He has multiplied our provisions and met our needs every step of the way.

May God bless you as you follow His Spirit and purpose to give Him every area of your life.

Sincerely,

Jim Bob Duggar

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

I thought it was WILD but at the same time amazing...to see how they really were put together, disciplined...not spoiled and the love they all had for each other.
God bless her for having ALL those children!
They seemed very happy with their decision of a big family.

ETA: I didnt think they lacked their childhood. If anything, they had each other, kept busy, played with each other and were safer that way then running the streets and who knows, get into trouble other ways.

Re: what do you think about the Duggar family with 16 children

How do they afford that? I think it's sort of irresponsible to have that many, because how do you honestly give each kid quality time?
