What do you think makes a great teacher?
From a parent's perspective- what do you expect or want from your child's teacher to classify them as "great"?
As a teacher myself- I'm curious to see from the other side what the opinions are!

Re: What do you think makes a great teacher?
A teacher is "great" when they can help my child learn in his/her own way, does not see education as a cookie cutter experience, can control the class so it is not full of chaos, understands that social situations are often just as important as an A on a test for children, wants to involve me in my child's education and cares about my opinion on matters related to my child, and keeps me informed of activity dates.
That is my 2 cents.
I have a few teachers from my K-12 days that I feel truly believed in helping me learn and not just memorize. And they helped me give me a love of learning and not just a fear of tests.

I know this isn't necessarily what you were looking for, but I thought it might help.
The best teacher I worked with (I just graduated college) was there for everything. Honestly I couldn't believe how different my experience was with her compared to my two prior teachers.
The things I learned from my cooperating teachers:
1. Classroom Management/Discipline is half of teaching. If you have control of your classroom and they respect you, you can accomplish anything!!!!
2. This teacher, prior to every observation, was hands on through the whole thing. We talked out my lessons. I would write out the most detailed lesson plan (including what I planned to say), and she would read it and edit it. A day or two before my observation we would practice my lesson while the class was at a special. She would give me feedback. It also helped me to calm my nerves, and know what I was doing and where I was going. We also set up the room so that EVERYTHING was ready to go, including tape already on posters/board. This was one of the best things she could have done for me, and it truly made a difference.
3. She also taught me true integration of subjects. Just because i was being observed in S.S. did not mean I had to teach only S.S. Every single lesson I was observed on had at least 3 subjects, plus character education in it.
4. I was never a photo copier/filer. I mean I did help and did those things too, but during a time when a reg classroom teacher would do them. She did give me a lot of control of the classroom, and I ran many lessons on my own because I was able to. Trust your instincts as a teacher. I have seen student teachers that just couldn't do it on their own, while others can take it and fly!
If I think of anything else I"ll let you know!!!

Re: What do you think makes a great teacher?
Speaking as a teacher (but I'm sure any parent would agree) a GREAT teacher can only be great if they have classroom management. It's NUMBER ONE as far as I am concerned. If that classroom isn't running like a well oiled machine everything else falls apart. When there is routine, rules, consequences, order, organization, etc. a classroom just flows and when a classroom flows it frees the teacher to be at their best. Teachers can teach and attend to their students as opposed to spending their day disciplining and wasting valuable time.
Aside from that, great teachers genuinely care about their kids, they work hard to provide a caring classroom that is also a fun and interesting place to learn and grow, they value their students opinions and thoughts and they also work with parents closely to make the school year a success. All of these things combined make a GREAT teacher!!

ITA with all of the above!!!
My son had an AMAZING teacher this year! She had total control over the class & every one in the class helped out with different jobs! They did a lot of hands on stuff and she read to them constantly! My son is now reading 2-3 books a week because of the huge love of reading she had! Also every time I would see his teacher she would come right over to me and let me know how he was doing & what I could work on at home. I really appreciated all the time & hard work she put into our class!! She also made it a point to get to know each child and really work with them on the subjects that they needed to improve on!! I really feel like ds is ready for 5th grade now!!:) hth
