What do you think of this RE: pediatrician recommending feeding times...

He told me that I should feed my 4 week old at 12am and postpone the next feeding until 5am so I get some sleep.

I said, well, since he wakes up every 3 hrs on the nose I'm sure I'll be up w/him screaming his head off from 3am to 5am...

Dr said that eventually DS will fall into the schedule and I'll be able to get a nice 5hr stretch of sleep.

Do I do it? Not sure if it matters but I'm EBFing.

Opinions?

TIA!!

Re: What do you think of this RE: pediatrician recommending feeding times...

I EBF until DD was 10 weeks old and I had to prepare to return to work (she gets formula & BM). Anyway...personally, I don't agree with that. My DD sounds like your DS...she was like clockwork, she was hungry every 3 hours and would eat. I'd agree more with him if your baby wasn't eating full meals, but I'm guessing he is and not just snacking (DD ate full meals every 3 hours, not snacking). I personally would feed him when hungry...if he's like DD, if he's hungry after 3 hours and you try to hold him out, he probably won't be a happy camper and you won't get to sleep anyway.

ETA: But do whatever works for you. As lots of people say on here, a happy mom (who gets some sleep) is necessary for a happy baby!

My ped. said to just let the baby sleep and when she wakes up hungary then feed her and told me not to wake her every 3 hours.

I found if you feed the baby more during the day, she doesnt wake up at night.

I don't think it's that clear cut with a 4 week old baby. I'm not sure that would work...DD would have cried forever...when they are hungry, they're hungry. I would wait until he's a little older. At this stage they really are hungry all the time and need to be fed.

I agree. At that age, when they're hungry, they'll let you know. You can't tell a 4 week old to just wait a little while... They'll fall into a schedule, but I wouldn't force it this young.

Wow. I thought with BFed babies you pretty much had to feed on demand.

My DS is five months old and we were just told not to feed him between 11pm and 5am.

I have to agree w/you ladies...this is strike #2 w/this pediatrician (things that he has said that rub me the wrong way). I have to figure out what to do as he is a friend of DH's family (DH calls him uncle) so I'm kinda in a tough spot!!! Thank you all for your opinions!!

Wow, that is a tough spot for you guys then. Really sounds like he doesn't mesh with your beliefs/philosophies very well (I remember your last post about him too). What does your DH say about the situation?

I agree with the PPs that BF babies need to feed on demand.

Yes, that is a tough situation. This Ped does not sound BFing friendly at all. Basically you have to either do what you think is best and ignore his advise or find a new Ped [and risk a problem with DH's family].

Re: What do you think of this RE: pediatrician recommending feeding times...

IMO, this is NOT good advice. I do not believe in forcing such a young baby onto a schedule. We, as parents, should feed the baby when they are hungry. The "not feeding the baby until a random time that you have set" is VERY old school advice.

When you are breastfeeding, you NEED to feed on-demand. You most likely need a more supportive and breast feeding educated ped.

Babies go through growth spurts all the time...what are you supposed to do? Let your kid starve/scream until the time you scheduled to feed them? I do not agree with your pediatriciam at all!

Your Breast milk supply is based on the feeding demand of your child. If he/she is hungry, wants to nurse for comfort, etc then you do it!
Plan and simple!

Sorry this got me upset!

I would find a new pediatrician!

Re: What do you think of this RE: pediatrician recommending feeding times...

I agree with the PP. My DS is almost 5 mths. and I have BF him on demand since birth. Some nights he sleeps through the night other nights are erratic. I do admit that I try to rock him back to sleep if he is waking up every 2 hrs., but if he doesn't fall back to sleep in a couple of minutes I feed him.

It sounds like a tough situation, but you have to feel comfortable with your Ped.

DH is OK w/doing either, what the Dr suggests or what I want...I haven't mentioned to him yet that I'm unhappy w/the pediatrician enough to switch, although he does know I am upset w/the recommendations I'm getting.

He won't care, but he will be worried about how we're going to explain it to them when they find out! I think I'll do what I think is best for now and wait it out a few more visits before making a decision.

Thanks ladies!!!! Chat Icon

Re: What do you think of this RE: pediatrician recommending feeding times...

This naturally happend with our DS. The ped said that by 6 wks of age they will have one 5 hr stretch of sleep. He said to make sure to keep daytime feedings to 3-4 hours max and to wake up if not to push this feeding to the night time. I think it was around 3.5 weeks that DS first went for a longer stretch through the night - it was like 7 hrs and I FREAKED when I realized but, called the ped and he said this was fine.

Hope this helps Chat Icon

ETA: I did not force the stretch upon him though - he did it naturally - I just let him sleep where as before I would have woken him if he went this long.
