I have a few baskets and a toy box but it's just not cutting it. I have 4 large Little People things and small toys everywhere. Where do you store everything so the floor isn't covered?
We have a finished basement but to me it just looks like a cluttered mess.

We're in the same boat. We use baskets but it's still a mess. I think the only thing that works is the garbage bag. Once that comes out, the kids clean up their toys in minutes.

Barb Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon We're not at that stage yet and I have to say she's good at helping. It's just my neat freak is really having a hard time with how it all just looks like clutter.

My problem with the toy box is everything gets burried.

I would love to find some kind of shelving sysytem that isnt thousands of dollars!

ROTFLMAO! I'm cackling with laughter over here. The ole garbage bag does wonders for resistance at clean up time. Just the sound of me putting a new garbage in the kitchen can illicits a Pavlovian response and has them scrambling to pick everything up. j/k - I wish that last part was true but I do do the garbage bag as the final straw for toy cleaning battles.

In response to the original question, I find the toybox is an easy dumping ground but ultimately is a PITA when it comes toys with pieces. I am the queen of baskets and bins. I think a plastic bin with a lid is the best thing and on shelves. Open top things is just an invitation to toss things around for the smaller kids or destructive ones like my DD (for some reason she likes to go all "rock star" on the toys, the crazy lady) so I find if I have lids, it's less likely to be as messy. Still messy unless you put it in a closet and make them ask for each toy and put each one away before getting another. I know someone who did that (I think the closet was actually locked) and her son is now 11 or 12 and is very neat and organized but it's hard to allow them to be creative when it's hidden I think. I continue to help them separate stuff when they put it away and hopefully it will eventually become commonplace to put the stuff away neat. I hope. I dislike when toys are just flung in a box and pieces of stuff are all mish moshed together. Like I said, that's the problem I see with a toy box.

Oh yes, and the toy purge. That's an important tool to keeping things straightened out.

I use this and I love it. It is specially good for small toys. It is from Target.

The floor. We simply use the floor. And a big pile.

we used to do baskets, but I decided to try these:

from Bed Bath Beyond.

They are so much better. For one - they don't look as bulky as baskets. Two: they can stack on top of each other - so if one is only half filled with little people or something - you can put another on top of it.

We are putting up shelves in our playroom so we can stick them away like the above post.
