It's pretty casual these days. I saw Chicago last week and didn't notice anyone dressed up. We were shopping and walking around the city all say so we had on boots, jeans and blazers. I think you could dress up a bit and not be out of place. When I saw the ballet at Lincoln Center I saw a few people dressed in gowns! I think people dress more for the opera and ballet.

I feel like there has been a shift over the years in how people dress for shows. It used to be regarded as more formal than it is these days. You can really wear whatever you want. There will be people in the audience dressed up- and there will be a bunch of people in jeans, shorts, etc.... I go to lots of shows and basically if I'm in the city for the day beforehand I dress more casual, but if I'm out for a nice dinner with dh or celebrating a birthday that night, etc then I'll dress up. Either way, there's always a huge variety of how people are dressed so you can't go wrong!! Enjoy the show!!!

ITA...I used to get dressed up, now it's jeans and a top, and I am the one that looks more dressed up than others! Last show I went to was with my friend from Israel who went with his staff from the camp he was working with and they were all in tshirts and shorts

People are generally dressed like slobs anywhere that used to be 'special' (Broadway, Lincoln Center, Ballet, Opera, etc) It infuriates me.
If you look neat and clean you will be fine.

I feel the exact same way! It's embarrasing to see some of them! You are IN THE THEATER!!!! 
I always dress up: not like if I was going to a wedding, of course, but a NICE pair of jeans and a beautiful top in the least or a cute dress! And make sure my kids are also dressed nicely: button down shirt for my son and a dress for my daughter! That way they know how one SHOULD look when going to the theater!

I went to a Broadway show recently and it was mix. You can dress up if you want to, and you won't be the only one. But I saw plenty of people dressed casually. You could easily get away with a nice top and nice jeans.

It's actually really sad. It drives me nuts to see people dressed like they're going food shopping at places like that.

I agree with the PPs about some people looking like downright slobs. The theatre is not a place for velour tracksuits. It's the theatre, not the movies.
But anyway. Nice jeans and a pretty top/sweater is fine. Some people get really dressed up, but most people do slacks and a nice top or nice jeans and a pretty top.
Most of the time I go after work (because I work in the industry) so whatever I'm wearing to work is what I wear to the show...usually a dress with tights and boots or flats.

Nothing fancy. I just saw spiderman a few weeks ago and we also went out to eat. I wore skinny jeans with a top, blazer and riding boots.
