In general you subtract five years from their age to figure out their grade.
It varies a little because of when they are born in the year, but it's a good rule of thumb.

And sadly there are some 15 year olds still in 8th grade.

I would think most people turn 15 in 9th grade or the first few moths of 10th grade.
I missed the cutoff date for kindergarten by two weeks, so I was one of the older kids in my class. I turned 15 in November of 9th grade.
I remember a girl in my class that turned was 16 at the beginning of 8th grade
