What happens...cop and civilian car incident

In the middle of the night, last night, DH and I were awakened by noise (cars screeching, bangs) on the street.

DH heard at least two bangs, like car crash bangs. We went to the windows and saw and heard undercover cops get out of their car, which was stopped behind a first car askew on the street. The cops were serious and quick about arresting the driver of the front car.

The cops cuffed the driver etc. and also later towed his car, which had some damage.

This morning, we see more closely the tire screech marks, which veer into 2 parked cars. These parked cars were there last night, and still this morning. The parked cars each have big ol' dents and impact damage.

I was wondering what happens for the owners of these parked cars? Do the police notify the car owners of incidents like these? I'm in Brooklyn. Do I tell the owners of the cars? I don't know the owners, but it's likely the owners live in our building. There are no other residential buildings in our immediate area.

I'm thinking, shouldn't the owners of the parked cars know what happened?

If it was my car, I'd want to know if someone witnessed it. Especially since it happened in the middle of the night. Maybe leave a note on their windshield?

I'd definitely want to know what happened if I owned one of those cars. I actually woke up to my parked car being smashed in overnight on my street in Queens and I was so PO'd that someone would do that and just drive away and no one heard and saw anything or told me anyway.

We left notes on both cars. It really can be so frustrating coming back to your car with damage. It's happened to me.
