Re: What is better shutting of your computer when not using it or...
It's one of those "it depends" questions. We keep ours one because we often check our email, or play a quick game, check LIF, etc. For us to turn the computer on, wait for it to start, do what we need to do, then shut it off, we'd probably use more electricity, and waste a lot more time. It takes a bit of energy to start up the computer. Plus, there is a surge of electricity when the computer is turned off, which many believe shortens the lifespan of some components.
If you don't use it that often, or at least not that many different times during the day, you may want to shut it off, or hibernate it.

My FH is in the technology/computer biz, he leaves his computer on 24/7 as well as all the employees in the office, we have never had a problem with the components
Now on the other hand, my mother who is the cheapest person on earth, refuses to take my FH's advice and turns her computer on and off everyday She has BLOWN out 5 Monitors already. Now she has lived in 2 different places so u cant say itsa the outlet or something. I think its better to leave it on than buying new flat screen monitors all the time

Re: What is better shutting of your computer when not using it or...
Thank you so much. During the day while we are at work no one uses it. So maybe I will shut it off during the week and leave it on during the weekends.
I am trying to bring our LIPA bill down as much as possible.

I leave mine on all the time simply because it takes too long to boot back up. I dont think its too expensive to run all the time.

Re: What is better shutting of your computer when not using it or...
I once read that the electricity used in all the computers left on overnight could power the Czech Republic for an entire year.
I shut down my home computer every night. There is no reason to leave it there drawing power if you won't be using it for 8 hours.
If you must leave it on for whatever reason, set it to hibernate and shut off the monitor.
Today's computers are designed to handle 40,000 on/off cycles before failing -- a number you probably won't reach in the average lifespan of a computer.
I also use a blank screen saver because it uses less energy than picture slideshows or flying shapes.

Computers use ALOT of energy. If you turn it off all night/ when you are at work, your electric bill will be much lower. We save sooo much $$$ this way. Actually, you save even more if you unplug it, as it plugged in continues to draw power.

Re: What is better shutting of your computer when not using it or...
you can buy a device called kill-a-watt that will measure the efficancy of turnong off/on products will do against your bill...
There are major differences in wattage of computers as some are as low as 200w/h and up to 600w/h
I personally always have 1 on and try to shut everything else down when not in use...

When we're at work, it's off. At night, we'll leave it on for 2-3 hours before we sit down to relax for the evening.
On the weekends, it's usually on all day, either burning dvds, or for our own use.

She has BLOWN out 5 Monitors already.
That's not normal. The act of turning a computer on and off will not be the sole cause of monitors blowing out. Thank God, or else I'd have gone through tons of them myself!
Before I was concerned about electricity, I would leave my work computers on all the time with a minimal screensaver.
Now I always turn my home computer off, and have been for 8 years on the same monitor. No problems there.
It's a no brainer - your computer, monitor, printer, scanner, speakers, etc. are all drawing power when they're on. Heck, they're even drawing power when they're off as long as they're still plugged into the wall. Your electric bill would be less if you shut them off. If you're at all concerned about that, shut 'em down.

If you're gone for the day you may want to turn it off. Lightening/ losing power in your home could cause the hard drive to crash. Unless you have a REALLY good back-up power source, that is
Of course, your hard drive won't always crash in this situation, but it's not worth the risk, IMO.

We leave ours on all day. At work sometimes I log on remotely and get files that I need off my computer. At night, we do backups.

Re: What is better shutting of your computer when not using it or...
I just looked this up online last week and this is what I found:
"One reason why you might want to turn it off is economic. A typical PC consumes something like 300 watts. Let's assume that you use your PC for four hours every day, so the other 20 hours it is on would be wasted energy. If electricity costs 10 cents per kilowatt-hour in your area, then that 20 hours represents 60 cents a day. Sixty cents a day adds up to $219 per year.
It's possible to use the energy-saving features build into modern machines and cut that figure in half. For example, you can have the monitor and hard disk power down automatically when not in use. You'll still be wasting $100 per year"
So I decided to turn off the computer at night. It can't hurt the LIPA bill.
