What is the average amount of time that people look for jobs?
Especially a full out job search, not just looking occasionally to see what is out there.
Any ideas? I have no idea. I've been looking for 3 months and I was curious what the average is. I have heard no responses yet.

Re: What is the average amount of time that people look for jobs?
I would say a normal job search could take 3-6 months in a decent economy depending on the field.
These days it could be up to a year.
Lots of folks who have been out that long though find it much harder to look.

I think it varies widely depending on industry, type of position, networking ability, location -- probably other factors too -- but 3-6 months on average sounds about right.
You're looking for a JOB job, right? Not a postdoc?

Right! A job. No postdoc for me!

Right! A job. No postdoc for me! Cool, good luck! I'm excited to see what you'll end up doing. We "alternative career" scientists have to stick together!

Thanks! I'm looking into education and public outreach. I've applied to a few museums, and also universities. I'd prefer a museum job, but I'm keeping my options open.

Re: What is the average amount of time that people look for jobs?
I graduated with my masters in December, and it took me about three months to find a job...I just got a job with a non-profit on Monday. So although it was a frustrating process (didn't hear back from hardly anyone), it will all work out in the end. Best of luck in your job search!

Re: What is the average amount of time that people look for jobs?
in this economy...
my DH quit his old job in July 09 and started job hunting in Sept 09 (we moved/took a trip in Aug 09)
heard basically nothing until Jan 2010. had a few interviews and got a job offer in Jan 2010. Started new job in Feb 2010.
In March 2010 he got about 5 more calls about interviews
It looks like the economy is picking up but its not unrealistic to take months if you are looking for a particular field

Re: What is the average amount of time that people look for jobs?
It took me almost a year of active looking. I was mainly applying for industry jobs and wound up taking a postdoc because I needed something. I am hoping the outlook is better in 2 years when the term of this position is over.

Re: What is the average amount of time that people look for jobs?
I haven't seriously looked in a couple of years. I have never had a problem in the past because I have a lot of networking contacts and have gotten most of my jobs that way----right away. My field also tends to always be hiring, although from what I am hearing, things are tougher now.
I know a few people in social work who can't find anything and are stuck at a job they hate even if it's still in social work.
New grads without experience have it tough as well because it's an employer's market. Because many supervisors don't have time to supervise anymore and client problems are really tough and complex, many employers don't want to hire new grads without a lot of working experience.
