what is the cut off date for kindergarten?

Is there a specific cut off date to determine when you start kindergarten? Does it vary by district?

I ask because I'd like Ella and her future sibling to be no more than 2 grades apart, but I think I'd like them a bit older than 2 yrs apart (as I'm not ready to TTC yet).

So E's a June 2006 baby. If the next one is born before Dec 08 or Jan 09, does that work?

(yes, I am overthinking this)

I *believe* it is December 1st for public school. I have no idea for private schools though.

Re: what is the cut off date for kindergarten?

Actually I believe some districts cut off on December 31 (Hauppauge and Dix Hills among them). Funny you should ask because my district cuts off December 1 and my dd will not be 5 until the middle of December. However, she will be attending a private kindergarten program, at the school she currently attends. This is a state certified program (only 8 children) and I was told she was eligible as long as she is 5 by December 31.

I actually had a hard time with this decision and although she is going to kindergarten this year I fully intend to enroll her in kindergarten in my district the following year despite being told that the district would, after testing her enroll her in first grade.

I would rather she be the oldest as opposed to the youngest in her class, for all sorts of reasons that don't include academics.

call your district... some districts are Dec. 31st but most are December 1st...

funny thing is that my friend lives in maryland and her daughter was born a year before Jacob on September 8th... Where she lives the cut off is Sept. 1st so she will be in the same grade as Jacob but a full year apart... Crazy....

I think it depends on the district. Some are as early as November 1st and some December 31st. A friend of mine from grade school was actually a Dec 31st baby and born the same year as me and we went through school in the same grade. Check with the district.

This is true. Each district dictates it's own cut off date.

It varies by district. My district is the end of December, but I usually recommend that if your child has a "late birthday" that you reconsider before putting a four year old in Kindergarten. Some kids are totally ready at 4, but in my experience kids do better with that little gift of time. Schools demand a lot at a young age now.

Here in Ohio the cutoff is Oct 1 (I think), so Jack will turn 5 Oct 19 and will have to wait a whole year to go to Kindergarten. Molly will be the same way since she is Oct 25. Kind of wierd!

My friends that teach tell me that districts do this to keep reading scores up. I read that many LI districts are starting to consider doing this as well.
