Just curious.

MRI is a in an enclosed tube where they take magnetic images of whatever part of your body they need. a CT is usuall done with a dye injection and then they have a open arc type machine they x ray you with.

An MRI can have a dye as well (at least the ones I have had for me head always included the dye_ My doc called it a contrast MRI

MRI shows nerves and tissue and a CT scan shows bone. Either one can be with or without contrast.

Re: What is the difference between an MRI & a CTscan?
a cat scan is a diagnostic imaging procedure using a combination of x-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called slices), both horizontally and vertically, of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general x-rays.
an MRI is a diagnostic technique that provides cross-sectional images of the brain and other organs and structures within the body without X-ray or other forms of radiation.MRI is a way of getting pictures of various parts of your body without the use of x-rays, unlike regular x-rays pictures and CAT scans. A MRI scanner consists of a large and very strong magnet in which the patient lies. A radio wave antenna is used to send signals* to the body and then receive signals back. These returning signals are converted into pictures by a computer attached to the scanner. Pictures of almost any part of your body can be obtained at almost any particular angle.

I had a ct scan w/contrast of 2 discs in my back.It showed the way the dye blew out of my ruptured disc so the surgeon knew what was going on with me.

I just had a CT w/o contrast for my abdomen (kidney & appendix) a few weeks ago.

Re: What is the difference between an MRI & a CTscan?
I had a CT scan when I had my kidney infection. I had to drink this most awful tasting drink and also have something injected into my IV line. The CT scan took less than 5 minutes total!

Right. The MRI works on a magnetic principle whereas the CT scan is more of an x-ray.
