The more you make, the more you spend.
For the party planner, I could see going over the top because the entire thing is a "business expense"/advertising.
It already worked for him. He was interviewed by ABC News.

Re: What is the world coming to...
I agree with Barbara - for this parent, the money was well spent considering this is his JOB - making an impression will bring in innumerable clients.
But, for those parents who aren't in the business, I just don't understand - it's getting out of control, this need to show off, and top your friends and neighbors.
Why is it becoming such a growing need to impress people? I'm seeing it with some of my (former) friends - one couple in particular, who decided to sell their 2500 square foot, 4 bedroom house, to purchase a $650,000 home, for the sole purpose to "wow people" (this is exactly what she told me). I know how much they make, and I know they will barely make ends meet with the new mortgage.
Has this been going on forever, or is it a growing phenomenon? And where in the world is it coming from?

Yup, plus he would have charged a client $50k, but it didn't cost him anything near that. He probably got a lot comped for providing so much business to these companies, plus I'm sure he told them he was going to put out a press release with their names in it and he'd mention them in any interviews.
Back when I was planning my wedding I was working for a hospitality related organization and got quite a few things for a signficant discount.
