What is up with this?!??!?!?!?!?!
The only elementary jobs out there either require bilingual extension or say bilingual preferred. I understand that there are growing populations of ESL students but, I went to school for 6 years to do this and now I need to learn how to speak another language? So how many of you are bilingual or hold the extension?

im bilingual  actually trilingual. where are these jobs? (I havent been looking though  )
I know a few districts that I was told would hire me quicker because I speak Spanish... didnt know how true that was.. hmmm...

 Trilingual? That's incredible. How long have you been speaking other languages? I have heard the younger you start the easier it is to learn. I can't imagine trying to learn 2 other languages!!!! Though I would love to be fluent in Spanish and French.

Im first generation Italian AMerican, so I grew up speaking Italian at home,and took SPanish in school and it was very easy to learn. and I always use it when I need to, whether speaking to someone at a store, school, etc.
Ive picked up Greek and Armenian here and there too, just little bits

I think the ESL extension is just a few classes, bilingual is obviously a lot more intense. I see a lot of districts nowadays posting about "bilingual preferred" (even those districts where you don't perceive a huge need).
I know enough Spanish to communicate with the parents, but I wouldn't call myself bilingual by any stretch .

I just signed up and was checking out OLAS just now. I havent really searched for jobs, but I might as well see whats out there.
Question- some say bilingual preferred, some say bilingual extension required..
I wonder what the legit thing is there.. kwim?
I am bilingual but not by degree.
I had seen the posting on their home website (Brentwood) and it said bilingual preferred.. so Im wondering what the rules are with this. (whether I need the bilingual extension or not).

Maybe call BOCES and see what the bilingual extension involves? They have been awesome with helping me to get my business certification. They told me step by step exactly what I needed to do, but unfortunately there is a 15-week wait in actually getting the certificate printed  .
ETA: I'm not really sure how on interviews they determine if someone is bilingual if it's just "preferred" and not "required". Maybe someone on the interviewing committee will "test" you? That's a good question!!

Back in 93 when I was first looking, I had my teaching license for MA as well. The cover of the Cambridge, MA schools application listen over 20 foreign languages and asked you to check off which ones you knew. Most were Asian.
The reason being most graduate students from MIT are foreign born and their kids are in the public schools there.

This makes me angry, too. I mean, I know that they are in need of people who speak other languages, but it just makes me angry that now, in a country where the native language is supposedly English, an English-speaking teacher can't get a job because they're "unqualified"!!!!

I am an ESL teacher and our bilingual program in my building is growing every year. If you have your bilingual extension you are going to get a job in a heartbeat. That is where the demand is right now.

Being that there is such an influx of ELL's, mostly Spanish speaking on LI, the state requires you to offer a bilingual section for that grade level. If you have 20 or more students in the same grade, in the same building with the same linguistic background you have to offer a bilingual class. If the families opt out then the students will get ESL only. You must offer it though (not that everywhere does do that)
Also, the need for Spanish speaking teachers comes into play with all of the crazy testing we are facing now. None of the ELL's are exempt from the Social Studies tests, Science tests, and/or math tests. ELL's are only exempt from the ELA exam in January for the first year they are in the country. After a year they have to take it. Yes, the ELL's get special accommodations on the assessments, and all of the assessments except for they ELA they do get the test in their native language (ie SPanish) but if they weren't instructed in Spanish the chances that they will do wll are slim. It is the same for HS with all of the regents exams. This is where the Bilingual/Spanish speaking personnel comes in.
So sorry this has turned into a big annoying post. I hope it clears it up a bit for you.

ALso....if you are looking into a bilingual extension BOCES/BETAC has an ITI program. It is called the intensice Teacher Institute. We have about 5 teachers in the program in my district and they are working on being certified. It is through St. Johns, and I believe that BOCES funds it, so you do mot have to pay for it. Here is the info from the site: HTH!!!
Intensive Teacher Institute in Bilingual Education & English as a Second Language (ITI-BE)
The New York State Education Department Office of Bilingual Education created the ITI-BE to address the shortage of certified bilingual and English as a second language (ESL) teachers in New York. This state-funded program provides tuition assistance for twelve credits of specialized coursework and facilitates the certification process for bilingual or ESL general education teachers who are currently working in New York public schools. The ITI Program, which is housed at Eastern Suffolk BOCES, collaborates with school districts and institutions of higher education (IHEs) throughout the state. (Eligibility requirements and an application for the program can be downloaded from the following web site: http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/biling/iti.htm.)
