What is wrong with the world today?
I am watching Mike & Juliet on Fox5 right now and they are discussing the treatment of people in Emergency Rooms.
I cannot believe that the world has become this cruel and we leave people to die in the ER....
Here are the stories: News Report - YouTube

Re: What is wrong with the world today?
dude, I don't know.
I TRY not to think that it's just HERE in the states, but jesus, you just don't hear about this kind of thing in other places.
We are so sad, stressed, and miserable that we take it out on others.
we don't give people the benefit of the doubt anymore....we let them sit until we are good and ready to help...we like the power that gives us, b/c we are feeling more and more helpless.
and ultimately, I don't think it will be long before it becomes a world wide phenomenon.
for all of our high tech world, we are turning into barbarians.

Re: What is wrong with the world today?
Im not saying is right BUT the problem is the number of people that use the emergency room as their Primary care doctors office are tying up the doctors for the more serious problems that people come into the emergency room.
If they have 30 patients in the emergency room and they have to treat sore throats, colds, and other things that people could go to a clinic or their PCP for...that leaves less hands to work on the serious patients.

i am always amazed when people are shocked at reports of how humans treat other species on this planet. just look at how we treat each other and its not such a far reach.

I completely agree, and there is only so much an ER Doc/Nurse can humanly handle....what my issue and this post is that we as HUMAN BEINGS sit there and do NOTHING for our fellow man.
The woman collapsed on the floor and laid there and not one person helped her, or bought attention to the matter. Why did the police officer stand there and just watch?
How is it NOT human nature to want to help or do something for another person? Are we that malicious? Are we really to that point right now in the world?
It just breaks my heart that this is happening so frequently.

Re: What is wrong with the world today?
I think the world has always been this way. Look at the Kitty Genevese story- and that occurred in 1965.
I think, honestly, people ARE inherently good. However, the group mentality and fear of breaking from the group or the need for self preservation is what keeps people from doing what is "morally right" in specific situations.
In the case of that woman in the ER- that was a psychiatric ward- NOT a typical ER. Doesn't change the shock value of it of course, but the circumstances are certainly different than it it had occurred at a typical ER.

I just need to point out that it is NOT a police officer. It's the security staff of the hospital.

I will agree with this. A few years ago I was rushed to the ER on Christmas night with severe chest pains and I was short of breath. I had even lost consciousness a few times, only to have DH check my pulse to make sure I only passed out. I had to wait for the 15 people who had no health coverage to make sure their cold was only a cold. After an hour DH got so p****ed that he threatened to drive his truck through the front of the ER if they did not at least hook me up to an EKG or a monitor. It was ridiculous.

I agree with this. I was in a car accident when DD was an infant. We went to the ER. The doctors saw us swiftly, but in intake they told me that most of those people out there had no health coverage and just needed a routine doctor appointment, so they come to the ER.

that's ridiculous!- but Jake and I had the exact opposite experince in March at LIJ
I was about to leave for work when I noticed Jake was shaking- I asked him what was wrong and his speech was slured
I had no idea what to do
so I got him dress and drove to LIJ - the only hospital I know how to get to since he had sugrey there and I figured if it was something with his neck- they would know what to do
I pulled up in the front on the ER
got him out of the car and inside
before I could even get my insurace card out- they took him in
they allowed me to be parked illegally until I calmed down
they ran every test under the sun
but after 2 hours he was fine
turns out his doc prescribed 2 drugs that don't mix
he started complaining about being there- but I knew how lucky we were
my point is- it really depends on the hospital and the staff- which is scary that you can't expect the same level of care everywhere
there were at least 5 people in the waiting room that we were put in front of
