Re: * What is your best decorating tip?
I'm not the best decorator but these are some guidelines my husband and I use...
- Unless you have the money to redo it should you ever want to sell, don't invest in trends that can "date" your home.
- Find complimentary colors and what feelings they invoke in people. Cool colors, warm colors, two contrasting but complimentary colors.
- Odd numbers rule. I use this in gardening a lot too. They are more pleasing to the eye.
- Small rooms + dark colors or furnishings - natural light = smaller looking room.
- If you can't walk an entire room without slowing down, it's probably too cluttered.

Stick with neutral colors. for example, beige sheets go great with a blue, green, burgandy or gold comforter. So invest in a few sets of those rather than the nautical stripes.
Pictures are an excellent way to add a hominess (wassup homey!) and decorate. Do various size frames in a same or similar color scheme. I do all different sizes of black frames and hung up lots of family pictures in my hallway. In another hallway, I did gold frames with black and white wedding portraits of family members.
Hit up HomeGoods, Marshalls, TJ Maxx.

Re: * What is your best decorating tip?
Always buy what you want to buy. You don't have to spend lots of money to do that. BBB always has 20% off coupons, I save them up and then buy stuff there. I also LOVE Home Goods and JCPenny, Target, Micheals (w/coupons), and TJMaxx. I get an idea in my head, maybe it's something I have seen in a catalog or in someone else's pics or home and I go out from there. I buy things when I see them if I think they are a good price and will fit into the space I need or want it for. I'm shopping now and researching for our Family Room that we will be doing over the winter. This way I have the decor I want and I have time to buy it and really shop for it. Neutral colors are better for me and that is what my house is. But if you go bolder, just keep in mind that if you are going to sell the house in 5-10 years you will probably have to repaint to sell the house quicker. I like to buy Traditional/Modern furniture. Pieces that are timeless, but that is just my style. I hope this is helpful in some way. GL!

Re: * What is your best decorating tip?
get rid of clutter.... I used to have so many framed desk-top photos.. I got rid of almost all of them and put them in a 3-d-ish collage frame in my upstairs hallway. Now it's SO much easier to dust without having to move everything!
I second PP about artwork- TJMaxx, homegoods, etc are GREAT places to find art, mirrors and other decorative objects.
Mirrors are a great way to open up the room, reflect light, etc.
replacing knobs on furniture is a great way to make the pieces feel new/updated.
If you dont' feel like painting, use wall-sticks. I use blik (www.whatisblik.com)- have them in my dining room.
The colors you use in your house- especially in connecting places- should "flow" ... when painting my previous place, I bought all the paint at once and kept all the chips together to make sure there was a flow to the space.
Big one for book shelves- arange books & accessories by color. People think I am nuts, but it makes the shelves look less disjointed.
I have a "brown" tone shlef, a "red" tone shelf, etc etc.

Re: * What is your best decorating tip?
If you're not sure how to decorate a room, live in it for a while. You'll get a sense of how the room works with your lifestyle and what you would really like to place in the room.
Bring swatches with you. We had to buy furniture for every room of our house. I had a piece of the wood floor, couch fabric and paint swatches in my purse for months. If I ever came across something I liked, I could immediately check to see whether it would match the pieces that were already in the room.
If you are thinking too long about whether something will work in your room or go with what you already have, leave it in the store. You will most likely find something better down the road.

Start with a fabric you love (e.g., bedspread, couch fabric, curtain) and work from there. Do not paint a room before you know what fabrics you will put in there. It's easier to match a paint to a fabric than a fabric to a paint color!

I love this idea. I saw it on "Myles of Style" and loved the look. Here's the pic.

Re: * What is your best decorating tip?
I buy one thing at a time. I'd rather spend time looking for the one perfect thing instead of just filling my house with meaningless things. I hate clutter and tons of knick-knacks! I'd rather live in an emptier house.

if I see a gift bag, paper or fabric that I love-I buy it to use for color inspiration later. I also have an accordion file of rooms I've cut out of magazines to refer back to.
