What is your BEST potty training tip

I'm so frustrated with my son he is almost 3 1/2..he is peeing fine.....but the pooping I swear I'm going to give myself a heart attack over it..he is just not getting it...I know this is so bad I find myself yelling at him so much when he poops in his underwear..I'm just getting so angry....I'm at my wits end...today was just the worst....I just tossed the underwear in the garbage ..I could not even deal with it. Please any tips..............thanks

Re: What is your BEST potty training tip

I had the same problem. My son would go days without pooping and then wait for the one moment i would leave him alone and then poop his pants. what finally worked was not leaving the house for 2 days and not letting him wear pants or underwear. I had the potty in the family room and then all of a sudden he did it! After that we did pantless whenever we were in the house for a few days and a sticker reward chart and he finally got the hang of it. Good luck and hang in there. it will happen.

A sticker chart worked wonders for my DD and pooping on the potty. She would go in her pants ALL. THE. TIME. Drove me bonkers. I finally did a sticker chart - 5 boxes to start - and for every poop on the potty, she earned a sticker (and an M&M, I think). I put a picture of her prize on the chart so it was visible to her at all times. Once she earned her first prize (5 poops), the next chart had 6 boxes, then 10, and so on (I think we did 4 charts total, the last being 20). Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: What is your BEST potty training tip

Bribery. We found a toy he really really wanted. We would let him hold it in the box on the potty but he didn't get it until he pooped on the potty. We also figured out he could not figure out how to poop on the potty . Odd I know. But we gave him a little potty and all of a sudden he could do it. On the big potty he was not able to bear down to go. Once he figured out how to poop seated on the little potty we were able to transition him to the big potty. but yes bribery was definitely a good incentive.

Re: What is your BEST potty training tip

I found when they are ready it takes 5 minutes to train them (with bribes). 1st time I tried was a disaster.....waited a few more months...and I basically said if you have to pee or poop you go in the potty...if you do you can have what you want (doritos or munchkins)....worked...

Re: What is your BEST potty training tip

We used the potty chart with prizes too. The first time he got a cars car. They had a bunch on sale for about a dollar each so we got a few of them. We made a chart, where the he would get price after two, then three, all the way up to 5 boxes. He got one big prize. The last week we said there will be no more prizes so that he knew the prizes were going to stop.

Re: What is your BEST potty training tip

Mads was the WORST when it came to training for poop. She would refuse to sit on the potty and would rather poop in her pants.

She would always ask for a pull-up when she had to poop. So it was decided that if she had to poop, she could have the pull-up, but she had to do it in the bathroom. She didn't have to sit, but she had to be in the bathroom.

Finally, we worked her up to sitting on the toilet in her pull-up. This went on for AWHILE. Finally, in a fit of desperation one night, DH cut a hole in the damned pull-up and she went. Once she saw it had gone in the toilet, for some reason, that was "it" for her.

My only advice is please try not to yell. I tried to train my daughter before she was ready and she became a holder. She started holding her poops for up to 8 days and had to put on miralax for almost 2 yrs because it! I definitely say the reward chart. Try not to leave the house around poop time, if there is a time.

sorry for the stupid question, but what is the idea of pantless? why go pantless? how does that help?

I've read pantsless or loose fitting pants so that they feel if they make an accident. Not like a diaper or pull up wicking moisture away. Also just helps with getting the pants on and off for frequent potty time when you do an every 20 minutes on the potty method.

This being said, I have no tips as we're not there yet but DS is 2 and has just recently started to tell me that he pooped right when he poops so people are telling me that he's getting ready. Don't know if that's a natural happening or that I do tell him, every time he poops, since he's almost 2, that he has to start to learn and remember what if feels like when the poopie comes and tell mommy so we can get to the potty. He'll poop and then ask to go on the potty so I think we're ready for some steps that have or may be mentioned in this thread.

Something else I've read was to take the poopie diaper (firm one preferably) to the bathroom with DC and dump it in the toilet and say this is where poopie goes. Let them do it and flush too. Did this with DS yesterday for his morning poop and later that day, while he was getting undressed for jammies, he pooped in his diaper, then pulled it off like underpants (by himself while I was in the next room Chat Icon however had I been on top of him I'd have intervened and he would not had done this himself) and I found him standing by the toilet trying to dump it in but it was stuck in the diaper! Chat Icon His naked little self with poop smeared on his shoulder made me so proud! Chat Icon

Also another tip, take it as you will from a mom who has not potty trained a child yet, load up on the apple sauce and bananas to keep the poopies firm! We've been working on an exact science that does not constipate nor mushify (so much summer fruit!) his poops. Makes clean up in diapers, pull ups, potties, underpants that much more easy. Be careful with/limit juice boxes. I know some kids who have blowouts after juice!

Re: What is your BEST potty training tip

What worked for ds was offering him something he loved that he usually doesn't get, m&ms worked like a charm, then graduall we were able to just do stickers on a chart and then he stopped asking for any reward and just started going on his own.
Also put his poop in the toilet and show him and let him flush so he gets the idea of it.

BRILLIANT!!! Chat Icon Super prime example of you do what you have to do and every kid is different! Way to go! Chat Icon

Also, can the moms with the "charts" please share pics or details. Did you just draw a grid on paper taped to the wall or go all out fancy bulletin board glitter style? Chat Icon Did you hang it in the bathroom, in their room?
