What is your biggest concern surrounding sex education in schools???

I have been given the very broad topic of "sex education in schools"
I need to focus on one issue and then write a term paper on that
Right now my daughters are 2 and 4 so I am out of the loop, so to speak on the issues
While doing a google search I was lead into the Gardasil controversy
I asked the professor if that topic would be fine and she said yes. However another student said it is really not a controversy because it will be mandatory and is much needed
If this seems like a debatable topic than I will start another thread on that

However I am open to any suggestions for another topic
Thank you !!!!

Where is the other student getting the information that it will be mandatory? I've never heard of that and I know there is a lot of debate about gardasil.

Re: What is your biggest concern surrounding sex education in schools???

I guess I have a few 'concerns' - although none are crazy.

I wonder about the age that they start sex ed. A lot of girls menstruate earlier and earlier. My son is in 5th grade.. I found out that more than half the girls in his class got their first period LAST year .. when they were 9. Sex ed - discussion about the bodies functions - doesn't start until late spring in 5th grade. It's odd to me that they are 'prepping' kids for things that may have already have happened to them.

Another concern is the scope of the education and parental participation. They mentioned sex ed will start in late spring this year, but they did not tell us EXACTLY when or give us a syllabus. I keep meaning to ask the teacher to give me something so I know what they will discuss, how they will discuss it and when. My sons already have a pretty decent idea about reproduction, but they have no clue about the mechanics. I don't know how far in depth they go in that direction and what type of support I can offer from home.

The other student is wrong because no matter what, Gardasil IS a controversial issue. Even if it is deemed mandatory, it will still be controversial because many parents don't like the idea of something being mandated in young girls concerning an STD. I think Gardsil is a great topic to use, eff the student who said it's not good! Clearly they don't understand the whole impact of it.

all this

For me also I wonder about the idea of they will portray holding off while also how to be safe. They are opposite theories. I remember dont have sex, DONT have sex, you'll get AIDS and DIE! sorta mentality then on the third day "Oh but if you DO have sex, here's what you should use.. rubbers, etc"

Or you could just talk about how much Sex ed HAS changed and why.

I do not understand why something should be mandatory that is NOT contagious in a typical classroom setting

I cannot find anything confirming mandatory Gardisil vaccinations...only there are many pushing for it

WOW- 5th grade!!!! I really am out of the loop!!

Re: What is your biggest concern surrounding sex education in schools???

Gardasil is very controversial. For one thing people oppose it because they are anti-vaccinations. For another, the oppose it because they think anything involving protecting students from the consequences of sex (like condoms in school) encourages sex.

Another very controversial issue regarding Gardasil is its use in boys. It makes a lot of sense for boys to get the vaccine as well, since they are the ones spreading it to girls, but many parents of boys feel less compelled to get it since HPV doesn't pose the danger to their sons as it does to the women they may one day have sex with.

i think Gardasil is a great topic.

Others that have probably been beaten to death are - condoms in schools, abstinence only sex education, should sex ed be in school anyway? Should parents be allowed to opt out?

Re: What is your biggest concern surrounding sex education in schools???

Another thing is when I was in later elementary school, like 5th and 6th grade they did like a one day sex ed thing, but we also had a LOT of AIDS education seminars. I knew ALL about AIDS and how you could and could not get it before I knew all of the ins and outs (so to speak Chat Icon ) of sex. You could write about whether that kind of specific AIDS education is still necessary, or if it's well known.

Re: What is your biggest concern surrounding sex education in schools???

Sorry, one more post.

My own personal biggest concern is about abstinence only education. I don't think it works, and I don't think it prepares kids for life in the real world. Some percentage of kids will have sex no matter what and IMO it's our job as adults - parents, teachers, etc to educate them. I know of people who got pregnant because they believed in total myths (can't get pregnant first time you have sex, can't get pregnant while having your period, etc).

I also feel like sex education needs to be more in depth. In particular, for women. There are a lot of women who don't understand how their body works, what their monthly cycle actually is, etc etc.

I would also love it if sex ed programs were more sex-positive. I don't want my kids to hear things like PP said "If you have sex you'll get AIDS and die". As much as I don't want my kids to go around having a ton of promiscuous sex, I don't want them to be afraid or ashamed of it.

"Sex Ed" in 5th grade is just basically teaching the kids about the difference of boys and girls bodies. There is nothing about intercourse and health class in 7th grade goes into more detail.

As a parent of a 13 yr. old girl, I don't plan to get her Gardasil as I don't think it has been out in the market long enough.

I have a 10 & 8 year old.

My concern is that our district eliminated health in its last budget cut. Sex Education is waiting for middle school. My concern is that it is late in the game. I heard from one parent that a student (also 10) has already had sex with his 13 year old girlfriend. I don't know how true it is but she told me she overheard her two sons talking about the kid.

I know we're not going to stop kids from having sex (my friend is a middle school teacher & just based on what she's said, Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

As for the controversy, as of September 15, 2011, there have been a total 71 VAERS reports of death among those who have received Gardasil®. There were 57 reports among females, 3 were among males, and 11 were reports of unknown gender. Thirty four of the total death reports have been confirmed and 37 remain unconfirmed due to no identifiable patient information in the report such as a name and contact information to confirm the report.

It's enough for me to go Christian Scientist over a "mandated" vaccine.

This is my biggest concern about Gardasil. It isn't mature enough to mandate, and apparently, the "cure" may be worse than the disease....

Maturation lessons need to start in 5th grade and continue into 6th.

sex ed should be a part of health in JHS and HS.

If I give dd guardasil, I will only tell her it's too protect against cervical cancer, not a green light to have unprotected sex.

Does anyone else have this song in their head when thinking of sex ed?

This is EXACTLY what you should be TERRIFIED of. This vaccine hasn't been around NEARLY long enough to know what long or short term affects it can have on those who get it.

IMO, it shouldn't even be out on the market yet.

ETA: To the OP, I think your topic is absolutely fine.

Tonight I hand in my main sketchy points. I am against mandatory vaccinications for the main reason is that HPV is not contagious in a classroom setting and is a preventable STD with proper protection.
Also I will see if it protects how many strains of HPV and how effective

Thank you everyone!!!

I think guardasil is a great topic

Im utterly against it and have no intentions of giving it to my daughter any circumstances. My coworker's daughter has been ill for years due to the injections. She's been in pain and in and out of hospitals.

It wasn't instant. It took years.

Count me and my daughter out. I had HPV when I was 22. My grandmother had died of cancer and 3 months later I had to struggle with this. I had the tip of my cervix removed as a result.

Still, I am against this shot. I was for it at first because it seemed like a good idea. I was turned off when I found it was not truly tested long term, big picture. Then I was utterly disgusted when they tried to make it mandatory.

Heb B is also not "contagious" in a classroom setting and is transmittable by ways that kids are normally not exposed to. Kids are not in the "high risk" group that contract Heb B. But, it's mandatory once they enter school/daycare. It's dumb IMO!
