Alcohol makes it!!
For the kids I do a container of cran raspberry juice, about a half cup of lemon or lime juice, a bottle of seltzer, half a bottle of ginger ale and then taste. If it needs more fizz but less sweet.. add more seltzer. If it needs more fizz AND more sweet - add more ginger ale. You can toss in fresh fruit for a 'mock' sangria.

I remember as a kid people put sherbet in punch similar to the one you described.
