What kind of cheese should I serve?
I'm having cheese and crackers as one of the appetizer's for my daughter's 1st birthdy party. Party is on a Saturday in the afternoon and I'm having 15-20 adults. What kind of cheese should I have? I'm not looking for anyting too expensive, but something people enjoy (I don't eat cheese).
TIA! Karen

Re: What kind of cheese should I serve?
I think the rule is one hard, one soft, one semi soft.
my rule is generally a hard, a soft, and a blue.
Fairway has a GREAT cheese selection and their staff is very knowlegeable. if you can get to one, try them out.
you can't go wrong with a GOOD cheddar (aged), brie, and maybe manchego. serve it with some grapes, walnuts, and apples. nice crackers.
you'll be good to go.

My top picks:
San Andre Triple Creme Fresh Mozzarella Ball Parmigiano Reggiano Wedge, broken up into chunks with a knife

Re: What kind of cheese should I serve?
one of my favorites to serve is an aged parmigiano broken into chunks and drizzled with honey
a brie or a camembert
and with doing a manchego
if some guests are picky its a good idea to do a cheddar or gouda

Re: What kind of cheese should I serve?
My advice for a classic cheese platter (best served after dessert imo) is something blue (Stilton is always good) something hard (like a good quality artisan cheddaror Manchego with Quince Jelly) something soft (like a brie, cambazola, or a goats cheese) and I always like a bit of cheesy cheese, something like Boursin or a Cheese while (with soft cheese in it) Also, serve with grapes, some kind of chutney or relish, a good selection of crackers (some sweet, some savoury) and some apples.
Yummy.

Re: What kind of cheese should I serve?
I am a sucker for some Goda, Chedder, and then maybe a brie or herbed goat cheese block. But you know your crowd best if they are not fancy cheese pple then a Jack cheese or Swiss may be better.
Crackers, cut up apples and red grapes. Yum

actually, there are 2 'rules'.... although rules were made to be broken
the first is hard, soft and semi-soft cheese ALL FROM THE SAME MILK (ex. all sheep, which is the most common milk for cheese).... the intention being that tasters can appreciate the milk in its different forms.... Alternatively, the other rule is 3 of the same (all semi-soft) but from 3 different milks (sheep, goat, cow). the intention being the tasters can appreciate what each type of milk contributes towards the flavor of the cheese...
I find manchego (a hard spanish sheep cheese) is always a crowd pleaser... It goes well with either quince paste (sort of like apple preserves) or a fig 'cake'...
I 2nd the fairway recommendation... I go every week for cheeses
